I think it likely made it easier to film in as they could get right up inside without the counter in the way or even just film the back half of the set with the doorway, counter and booths nearest the jukebox.

Have episodes been removed from rotation from the classic episodes? I had it on in the background while I was doing housework and making dinner last night, and it jumped straight from Shane Parrish's birth (labelled as Michael's death, but I've definitely seen the following episode on there before!), to Vinnie and Leah's wedding.

In the past, there have been quite a few episodes from 1996-2000 in there in the past.

it might have been a glitch. i just went to check the channel and they're showing 1996 episodes as I type. I've just watched the 2nd half of Marilyn and Donald's wedding and now they're doing the episode where Marilyn and Rebecca go skydiving.
