They seem to have mislaid one of the episodes. Where they said Mr Fisher proposes to Marilyn, the actual episode was 1996, when Joanne sends Angel on a wild goose chase with a hoax call about Dylan being in hospital. The episode ends with Alf pulling over Simon's limousine with him and Joanne in it, before Angel gets a chance to confront them.

I'd say the oldness has a lot to do with it. It's safe to say the production values were of their time, and they don't want to go there. They may not care for the Summer Bay of old either, because of how unglamorous it could be. The further back you go, the more you'll hear people going on about how tight money is. People drove cars that were one breakdown away from the scrapyard, and somewhere like Salt would've been too fancy for the locals. I think the producers like selling modern-day Summer Bay as somewhere aspirational. It's an eternally sunny place populated with physically attractive people who look good in swimsuits.

Fair point. Somewhere like Salt wouldn't have existed back in the 90's.  The Diner went through a brief phase of doing evening meals when it got moved in 2008, but it was very quickly moved next door ISTR.

It was a much more working class show back then, compared to how upmarket everything looks today.

This cycle seems to be going on longer than I thought. They seem to have repeated Michael's death about 3 or 4 times, and repeated other events, without going back to the beginning.

And there was me thinking it was cruel when they gave Pippa amnesia and put her through his death one more time...

Or part of the Sands Resort complex!

During Alf and Ailsa's dating period, they discuss going out for dinner at "The pub", but it is never seen.

We'd often see characters like Alf and Lance and Martin drink in their own home, but never out. I guess with so many teenagers, a bar/pub location wasn't needed in the early days.

Yeah the pub was talked a bit. And the RSL. There was also a fish and chips that was never seen.
