I am doing a little project. I am making a list of all the (early) episodes that 7PLUS are showing on their Home And Away channel.

So far, I have noted what looks like a playlist consisting of the following:

  • Alf & Alsa get engaged (21)
  • Alf & Alsa come home married (86)
  • "Pippa"'s first baby (156)
  • Roo having her baby (169)
  • Frank and Bobby's wedding (243)
  • Alsa having the baby while Alf and Tom are lost at sea (328)
  • Tom's death (525)
  • Carly marrying Benny baby (582)
  • Michael and Pippa's wedding (757)
  • David Croft's death (838)
  • Meg's tragic death (975)
  • Sophie having the baby (1030)
  • Pippa bringing her second baby home (1186)

After that, I think, is Bobby's boating accident (1298).

Not sure which ones are next, but some include Shane's death. Michael's death? "Cyclone Raymond" then we venture into less familiar episodes

The episodes labelled as Fisher proposing to Marilyn is a random episode from 1996 in which neither of them even appear! It involves the Angel and Simon story, and Rebecca trying to convince Casey to be part of the school choir.

I would love to see more early years episodes added into rotation too, like the 1996 earthquake, and the missing deaths like Ken Smih and Stephanie Mboto. It might also be good for some episodes like Tom's death and the mudslide had a part 2 as well.

The lack of a Part 2 for many of them can be very frustrating, especially when the big event happens towards the end of the episode. I've just checked to see where the channel is at the moment - it's 2022 and they've got Ari Parata's funeral coming up in a while. It won't be long before it loops back to 1988 and the same old same old.

By luck I caught it right when it looped back. When I opened the app this morning it was on the scene of 8yo Frank being chased by a policeman, what timing! So I tracked the beginning of the pilot episode in this loop as 4/12/2005 at 11:34:09am AEDT. The last cycle began at about 10pm AEDT on Monday, December 1, which means it looks like the cycle repeats itself about every 3½ days.

It's also annoying you can only watch it live. Maybe rights issues but it seemed to be fine when they were played on 7 two. So not sure why they can't release up until that point anyway.

Does it come back to H&A not wanting to be seen as "old" again? That would explain why the iconic episodes are "buried" in a Live TV channel rather than available as On Demand, perhaps even as a seperate tab to the 2024 and 2025 seasons? As someone that has only watched Hollyoaks since 2011 or so, I would love the opportunity to watch full stretches of episodes from the 1990s and 2000s - there are probably current fans in the same boat with H&A.

I agree about the "iconic" nature of some of the later episodes too, since attacks, stunts and guest character deaths are just the standard now. It would be nice to have some more iconic moments from the early years when stunts and deaths were actually "big events". I've listed a few above in a previous post such as the earthquake, and Ken and Stephanie's deaths, but even the death of guest character Rory was quite shocking at the time, as was some of the big moments from the Saul Bennett and Robert Perez stories. It's a shame some of us die-hard early years fans can't curate a collection of iconic episodes for streaming :P

I'd say the oldness has a lot to do with it. It's safe to say the production values were of their time, and they don't want to go there. They may not care for the Summer Bay of old either, because of how unglamorous it could be. The further back you go, the more you'll hear people going on about how tight money is. People drove cars that were one breakdown away from the scrapyard, and somewhere like Salt would've been too fancy for the locals. I think the producers like selling modern-day Summer Bay as somewhere aspirational. It's an eternally sunny place populated with physically attractive people who look good in swimsuits.
