Just watched Brodie's exit for the first time. She wasn't appearing much in the run up to her exit and her actual exit was a complete non-event. We knew she was going to go travelling a few episodes before she leaves but her final scene was a conversation on the beach with Dani about her upcoming travels and that was it, no farewell from anyone or being taken to the airport. Was like they wanted to quickly ship her out and keep it low key.

I haven't watched her exit since it aired, but now knowing what's to come, I assume the producers wanted her gone because she wasn't going to fit in with the new Sutherland/Hunter step-family. The Sutherlands were in the middle of the big Angie storyline/the end of Rhys and Shelley's marriage, so maybe it was intentional that Brodie's exit was a non-event so it didn't take away from the drama of that?

Brodie did also return for Alex's exit - if that was always part of the plan, it could also explain her low-key exit too.

Whilst Scott arrived shortly after it was another year or so until the whole Hunter family arrive so seems to far into the future for that to be the reason.

Agree the Angie storyline was the main focus which she wasn't really part of. Maybe the actress wanted out but was on a 3 year contract so they agreed to give her a quick exit on the condition she does her comeback stint.

What's silly to me is that moving away after finishing school is a logical exit, many of us do it in real life. All it really needed was a scene of her getting into a car to take her away.

Beth and Kit arrived shortly after Scott, and I think the other kids were at least name-checked early on through Beth, so I feel the long-term plans were at least being considered when Brodie left. We were also at the point where Dani had moved out, Shelley was going and Max had not long joined the regular cast, so maybe the producers saw it as a chance to "reset" the Sutherland family.

Ironically, Brodie was essentially an "adopted" Sutherland sister, and her return coincided with Rhys' wedding, yet she wasn't part of the "family" wedding either, which I guess is another reason I feel they wanted to move her on from the new Sutherland/Hunter family unit. Storyline-wise, the big car accident happened the same day as the wedding, I think, so it might have been more of a logistics thing.

The last period of Home & Away I've missed was around 3 months in 2004 (UK pace) which included the return of Brodie so I've not seen any of that yet. Surprised she wasn't at the wedding. I got the impression from the aftermath when I did start watching again that the Summer Bay residents were glad to see the back of her.

Some of us felt that way in 2002 as well

I've not seen the episodes since they aired, but from what I remember Alex was with Hayley, and Brodie wasn't going to let that get in the way of her winning him back. And anyone who crossed the writers' golden girl Hayley was always going to be painted as a villain.

Of course Hayley and Alex was never going to last anyway, since the writers saw her and Noah as endgame, but Brodie still came between them the nonetheless.

And then Alex left with Brodie only to briefly return 3 years later, have a falling out with Leah and then never return.

This was during my non-watch period, so I'm not familiar with the storyline for Alex's return. Given Danny Raco has directed on H&A, it's a shame Alex never made more frequent appearances at Leah's weddings and family events over the years like some of Neighbours' actors-turned-directors did.

Yeah that's always bothered me. It's not like it's hard to contact him and you think he'd want to make a quick appearance here and there. I guess he's just completely done with acting. During Theo's stint it would have been great, especially as Dimitri made an appearance. We had VJ's wedding and various weddings of Leah he could have attended.
