greg098 Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 I have noticed that a lot of soapies just skim across gay storylines, except for Neighbours who had a big storyline last year with lana and skye...and they even kissed. Most people didnt even care, but infact it made me actually start to watch Neighbours, because they werent afraid to do something different. I am upset how Lana was written out tho because her character was well written and not a 'typical gay person'. You ask anyone...a steriotypical gay person is basically a guy who acts heaps gay, dresses gay, sounds gay and is just plain basically gay...and I know for a fact that is very unrealistic...and I think a lot of tv shows protray that typical steriotype of gay people. The Bill have had heaps of gay storylines, even a gay marriage. There was a big uproar in the UK about 2 main characters kissing in uniform and when I was reading about it, I couldnt believe it...but in the end, it did wonders for the show because it got publicity and became more popular. Willow and Tara falling in love with each other was very well written. It was basically Willow who was confused about her feelings and she found someone who she was comfortable with and it lead to something more. When Tara died, Willow turned bad because they shared more then just love, it was a special connection...which I think showed a lot of people that just because you are gay, doesnt mean u dont have the same feelings as straight people. But the honest truth is, 1 out of the 10 people are now gay and shows like Home and Away who 'ignore' storylines like that, arent really being truthful to their watchers because there are gay people everywhere. At school, I had 5 gay people in my class and my class only had 30 people in it. I even have a uncle who is gay and a cousin who just got married to her girlfriend. I think Robbie acts heaps gay, so HAA should make him gay LOL
kirsty Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 They had the gay storyline on the O.C too, with Marissa and Alex But that wasn't just about the relationship and about them kissing and stuff. It was sort of showing marissa, for lack of another word, experimenting with her sexuality. Which i have to admit alot of my friends have done themselves. This storyline cause much uproar in the US that they had they were told to tone it down a bit! When all they did was kiss! I don't find gay relationships necessary unless it is needed for character development like it was in The O.C, Marissa didn't REALLY love Alex, Alex just represented everything she thought she wanted and that relationship showed her that it wasn't really what she wanted! Anyway sorry to go off topic there, but unless HAA need to do more character development i don't think a gay storyline is necessary!!
MR200SX Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 The OC is not so much a family program.. its a completely different style. Of course they had a leso couple, it can't hurt ratings but its completely different!
Pierced Musie Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 If they were to introduce this then I would rather have a character who just happens to be gay than a gay character. There is a difference.
Irish Fan Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 I wish Corey was gay, and just pretended he liked Martha to hide his true feelings. Did I mention I love Corey!
msf Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 There are no gays and no suspicious ethnics in Australia. Which explains Neighbours and H&A.
Krazy Karl Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 No, were such a conservative country that homosexuality is punishable by death. And if your not a wasp, you get deported.
Jay Preston Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 If they were to introduce this then I would rather have a character who just happens to be gay than a gay character. I'm with you. But I think we're dreaming thinking that would happen on a soap - even when the likelihood of getting away with it would be higher if you didn't make a fuss. Sad realities. Hopefully one day it will change. And if your not a wasp... "you're" and "WASP"

It was only when they brought back Luke that the character went downhill and turned into a gay character. Apparently that was the reason the actor left the show. He was there for a good 1-2 years before that character assassination and the only reason that happened was because the producer changed. It was around the time the show went from focusing on the police work to focusing on the personal lives of the characters. Basically what I'm saying is that it can happen. It would be so simple to bring in a character without them going through the 'Am I gay?' storyline. The character should be comfortable with there sexuality from the start and there doesn't even have to be a big storyline about it either. Rant over

Do I recall an incident where children were thrown overboard a few years back ?
