A gay character?

I think that compared to alot of American and British soaps HAA does trail behind on the coverage of real social issues, I guess it's due to different guidelines and censorship issues but personaly I can't see that changing antime soon. But on a whole other level I've heard alot of people saying how great it would be to see a couple of hot male characters together but I just don't get the attraction myself  , lol maybe it's just me.

I think the sad thing is that they're implying that homosexuality is bad and wrong by not showing it (even though they'll do violence, murder and adultery til the cows come home) and that it will somehow confuse the children if they see two people of the same sex kissing as freely as two people of the opposite sex. If that's the case, then maybe those kids are being raised in an ignorant environment and SHOULD see some same sex relationships on TV to learn that it's not the work of the devil, and that you don't have to be a psychopath to like someone with the same equipment. No one's asking for a naked orgy in a PG 7pm time slot, even though I've seen some hetero scenes that have personally made my stomach turn, so why is it okay to watch Cassie and Henk swapping stomach acids like porn stars, but not for Aden and Geoff to share a regular PG kiss? It just doesn't make sense!

No, were such a conservative country that homosexuality is punishable by death. And if your not a wasp, you get deported.

Lol. But isn't it true that its still technically illegal for two men to have sex in some parts of Oz? Sorry if I'm mistaken, somebody told me that quite recently though.

I love the old saying "I'm not homophobic, but I hate gays."

I would prefer it if they were female however.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Aren't all women secretely gay ?

I wish :P

... They should so bring a character in like Shane from The L Word. With Lucas & Drew mistaking the character as a he but it is really a she... who enchants every girl & boy.

*salivates* Oh my god that would be amazing, to see her in two of my favourite shows... wow... just... wow... the idea... *ahem*

Sorry back to earth. I would like it if they had a gay character but not if they made the gay-ness an actual stroyline. It should just be a part of the character. Yeah they would get some unhappy viewers but who cares? People would just have to get over themselves and get used to it. And what does it matter if its a "family" show? Children do not need to be sheltered from "gays", we're not some sort of evil cult ya' know lol! There are plenty of families with gay people in them, even plenty of families headed by gay couples. Not showing issues like this for fear of upsetting people only further stigmatises the issue. If they were just to show it and treat it as normal, people would have to get used to it and prejudice could be reduced.

Its true what someone said about the lack of ethnic minority characters as well. I can only remember Lewis, Stephanie, Charlotte and possibly Tiegan? Can't remember if she was possibly mixed-race or not. As for gay characters or characters with gay storylines, I can only remember Shannon, Zoe, Sarah, Dean, Christopher and Leah's friends. There was also Gypsy's crush on Shelley.

Ah, I see the topic title "A gay character" on the front page and I'm back to this thread within three seconds :D

Seriously, I hate American soaps and still I have heard of Luke and Noah. I don't know what soap they're from (Y&R? All my children?) but I couldn't have helped but notice how popular they seem to be.

Just concidering the huge amount of threads we have around this board discussing this seems to prove to me that the audience is ready.

I'm sure there were people offended by Martha's pole dancing or her abortion as well, but that didn't stop Seven from showing it. Someone will ALWAYS be offended, you can never please everyone, but you just have to ask yourself what's offensive to some people but still should be shown and what's too offensive for a soap like that.

I'm seriously surprised they haven't had a storyline like this yet, they have had a lot of other things just as "bad" or "worse". They did an incest storyline almost THREE YEARS ago for god's sake, two years ago a female character was drugged by a cult and raped by several cultmembers and during the last year we've had an abortion, pole dancing and a very questionable relationship between a teacher and a student that later ALSO involved his grieving father.

Oh well, we can handle that, but two boys kissing each other? No, can do!

Seriously? I am so sick of even having to have this discussion (not the discussion itself, just the fact that we even have to have it), I mean whether some people want to admit it or not it IS an issue, and more and more people are (thank god!) starting to accept the fact that two people of the same sex love each other every say.

In the words of William Well: "This is not about a different way of life, it is about life itself."

Incest?! What? I must have somehow missed that one... who on earth was it??? I don't remember Tasha being raped by several cult members either, as far as I remember it was one cult member?

Totally agree with what you said about them being willing to show all of this during the day, but not thinking we could handle a full-time gay character.

I've just had a thought... how about a gay couple moving into the caravan park house? Lol. I know they'd NEVER do it, but it would be great. Leah and Martha could be quite interesting I think. Or they could bring back Gypsy and Angel, they'd go quite nicely together too me thinks... :P

I think The writers have taken the "If you can't do the story right then don't do it at all!" Thing too seriously. Maybe we should be saying "If you can't do it right then Fcuk off the show and let somebody that can do it!"

Edit: Luke and Noah are from As the World Turns.

Hah! Good call :D

As for Tasha, it was implied that she was raped by someone other than Jonah, because it turns out that he wasn't capable of conceiving children. Whether it was someone in his place, or someone as well as him, is unclear. I think we're supposed to assume the former, so that he's absolved of all wrong doing and is okay for Martha to date, even though he did kidnap a few girls and held them hostage, Martha included

I'm watching the whole story from the start... I'm up to Chapter 30... Its just after Luke has admitteed to Noah that he likes him. Home and Away needs a Luke. *sigh*
