What are some characters you think stayed too long. My list is:

Carly and Ben -Personally I think would have been better if they were just written out after they got married in 1990. Basically did nothing until they written out suddenly in 1991.

Matt Wilson -I think he was other one that should have been written out in 1990 and was pretty much background for most his time anyway.

Adam Cameron -I think he should have been written out sooner than 1994 as his character antics just got so tiresome after a while.

Sam Marshall-Personally I think he should have been written out in 1993 with Greg or even with Morag if her storyline went other direction and Morag was genuinely wanted take care of Sam as other then storyline involving Morag trying to take him and Ailsa stopping her what more did he actually do for reminder of his time and despite being there for 9 years I can never can look at his as character particular memorable or certainly not iconic.

Tony  and Rachel  -Once  both got married and Rachel had her baby both characters felt speaking extras and don’t think help that both characters weren’t exactly interesting with there personalities and I think would be  better if they written out after they got married in 2009.

Dean and Ziggy-I really like Dean character but in his last year and Ziggy they really sidelined their characters and I think would better left in 2022 as after Ziggy really felt lost without her family and Dean also felt lost once Colby and Willow were gone.

What are your thoughts on characters you felt stayed too long?

Agree with Matt Wilson, probably the mos pointless regular character in the show ever. Saying that, he could have had potential if he had been given more dialogue and storylines. In 1988 it seemed to be Alison Bobby, Carly, Gary, Stevo, Frank, Roo, Lance, Martin etc out of the youngsters getting the storylines, while Matt was often "missing in action".

Tane for sure

You could arge that with many of the interchangeable characters from the last 5-10 years or so, but Tane is definitely the one that sticks out.

A couple for me:

  • Colleen Smart - she was also so camp and overacting. I never watched much of her post-2005, but it's hard to see how she stayed until 2012. Even during the years I did watch, she didn't have many big storylines - she had breast cancer and found her long-lost daughter (who was never seen again!), but both weren't really dived into at the deeper level they could have been. Maybe being a supporting character helps the longetivity of a character like a Colleen - if she had too much screen time, people would have got sick of her more quickly and would likely have become exhausted as a character much sooner.
  • Hayley and Jesse - we could have done without the final year of both characters. Hayley could have got her happy ending with Noah a year earlier and Jesse could have departed quietly after he and Leah broke up, rather than the whole Josie saga and then his eventual exit. Jesse's exit was dramatic, but it felt like he was thrown under the bus for his exit. We also didn't need grieving widow Hayley not knowing who the father of her baby (and then naming him after her dead husband!) was and then almost marrying Kim so soon after losing the love of her life.
