2023 Season - UK Episode Discussion

Thursday - it's certainly a generous gesture, but Dean just giving Mali the board shop doesn't seem very finance-savvy, especially when he presumably hasn't got anything lined up yet in Queensland and he has a new baby to fund, plus Ziggy presumably isn't heading back to work again yet and moving isn't cheap. (I'd forgotten Ben had handed over ownership to Dean as well, which would've been my next question.) What about just making Mali a partner in it, and gifting him 49% or whatever? That way Dean and Ziggy still have a bit of income from the business, at least.

Don't really care that much about Remi and Bree, but given how Remi's been in the past, I'm not surprised really that she's reluctant to tell him about the pregnancy. Even so, I don't think he's going to give up until he has proper answers from her, so not sure her strategy of cutting him loose is going to pay off; and as others have pointed out, she's not going to be able to hide it from him forever if she's sticking around in the Bay.

Friday - So, farewell Ziggy and Dean. I do think they're a good endgame couple and they've always worked pretty well for me as a pairing, so I'm really quite happy with this departure. I really liked the little flashback package; H&A ought to do more of this kind of thing (provided it doesn't look too much to network execs as if the show is engaging with its own past, of course); and the characters have certainly been around long enough to justify it.

Monday - Another episode full of moping and uneventfulness. People are probably bored of me saying it, but am I the only one who's really struggling with the newer cast at present? I really tried to watch it, but every time the characters started talking about the board shop or their feelings I drifted out again within seconds. Low cast counts seem to be a particular problem at the moment, meaning we're just getting the same conversations time and again in slightly different configurations; and it's particularly noticeable in episodes like this one where there aren't even any Diner veterans rostered on to add some token variety.

And today - well, it didn't take long for Tane and Felicity to iron out their issues, did it? I assume he'll say yes to her proposal, but if we're unlucky - and I suspect we will be - we might get a couple of episodes of Tane angsting about it first. I guess he's well overdue his 'turn' to have reservations about this marriage, as so far they've all been one-sided. More difficult-to-engage-with scenes with Remi and Bree; this pair can really drag out avoiding a simple conversation, can't they? And yeah, Bree is beginning to lose my sympathy too just because of the annoying repetitiveness of these scenes, even though on paper I think there's every reason she ought to be given a bit of a pass, after what probably legally constitutes rape by Jacob.

(As an aside, why, given Dean specified Izzy's surname was Thompson-Astoni, has she been credited as either Izzy Thompson or simply Baby Thompson on every appearance?)

Not that I've been paying the hugest amount of attention, but could it possibly be a caption size thing? I've noticed at times that some characters' surnames just arbitrarily get left off the credits - and I have it in my head that they're quite often (but not always) long surnames that get left off (Stacey Collingwood being a recent example, and I seem to recollect that they occasionally did it with Morag many years ago) and that it's maybe sometimes to do with space available on the slide (or perhaps not being bothered to rearrange the layout to make it fit?)

There's no issue with space (at least in this day and age), as you'll see below, though it was certainly a good theory. I'm afraid it's just down to pure sloppiness.

So, yeah, Tane and Felicity seem to have reconciled offscreen between appearances, which is a bit of a cheat: They say they've still got work to do but then we fast forward to a reproposal by the end of the episode. But hey, maybe there are discussions to come, especially with the awkward silence that followed.I can see why Tane's concerned, since the engagement was where things started to go wrong last time, but I do hope they work things out.

I might be an old stick-in-the-mud, but I'm afraid I didn't find Eden stealing Cash's uniform and pressuring him into pulling a sickie as endearing as it was apparently meant to be.

Bree's likability continues to get eroded. It is, of course, entirely her choice what she does about the pregnancy, but her attitude increases the feeling that she wants everything done on her terms.Remi, Eden and Rose all point out how unreasonable she's being, she even acknowledges they're right, but still she just decides to barrel ahead without caring about anyone else's feelings.

I tried to watch that but TikTok was much more interesting

I wish Bree would leave she’s just awful Eden wearing cash uniform I didn’t find endearing either In fact I don’t really care about Remi his just so mopey

Well, personally I think Flick and Tane ought to be grateful any of their friends and family reacted to their latest engagement with anything more than a sigh, roll of the eyes and a "here we go again", because that's certainly what I was feeling - never mind the attention-seeking flashing of the bling around and rudely demanding that Cash and Eden organise the second wedding for them.

A lot of non-movement elsewhere, with incessant chat about Remi's adventures 'up the coast' - the go-to locale for those in personal crisis - and Ava's absence from the episode limiting Leah and Justin to having the same conversation over and over while trying to lure Theo home, when it feels like the easier and more sensible (if less dramatic) course of action is just to leave him at Lyrik HQ until Ava's stay has played out. Meanwhile Roo's Leah-sanctioned stickybeaking has yielded even more reason to think that's going to be the best thing for everyone. Happily, tomorrow's episode looks like it's going to move us forward a bit more significantly.

Well, I was pleased about Tane and Felicity. It's a bit pat, but they did at least have a talk first. I do think they love each other and are good for each other, and I do think a part of Felicity wanted to get married before, so hopefully after her latest catharsis, that's the biggest part.I do agree it was a bit much for them to ask Cash and Eden to organise another wedding for them, although they did seem to check they were all right with it. I was slightly amused that Tane spoke to Nikau on the phone and we were given absolutely no idea what he's actually doing with his life!

I think Leah has officially become the most unlikable person in the storyline: Okay, it may have helped that Ava wasn't in the episode to remind me just how annoying she can be, but she's an emotionally unstable teenager, what's Leah excuse? As with last week, I really didn't like the way Leah treated Theo: Attempting to guilt-trip him into moving back in when he clearly doesn't want to, not because it's the best thing for him but to make her feel better. You'd think someone other than Roo would have thought to look at Ava's account before now, but I guess they need to involve Georgie Parker somehow. I actually found myself sympathising more with Justin, who is at least trying to stay on good terms with Theo even if he's still refusing to see what's going on.

Fun bit first - Cash throwing a sickie - but "I've got a bit of a cold" ? was that the best he could think of???  He's a big tough cop for heavens sake. Been sick all night, same now, must be a bug. Well I found it funny.?

A good in depth talk between bro and sis long overdue me thinks but she was never in the right head place before.  It took Cash by surprise that she'd visited their parent graves and she'd found it helpful.

So far Cash has been a very serious, by the book type, so it would be out there him. Sorry to disagree but as long as he doesn't make a habit of it, good for him.  He's been so intent in looking out for and  after Felicity he's had to be the responsible one so good he decided to let his hair down.

Flick and Tane did say they were taking things slowly but then Flick decided to propose and on the beach, luckily no-one was about to notice Tane's reluctance.  But  after his proposal in front of all their friends and cameras and  she felt she had to say yes, didn't she propose to him later?  May have seemed a demand, but seeing as Cash and Eden are now an item they can put their heads together and just tell Tane & Felicity when the wedding is going to be.  Obviously not anywhere it was last time.  Oh it does mean we'll see Gary again.??  Will Cash & Eden try and get Tane's family back over from NZ?

I know I'm swimming against the tide but I still like Bree and Remi and hope there will be a good outcome for them. Don't forget Bree is, possibly, tarring Remi with the same brush as she did with Jacob.  She couldn't trust Jacob's moods and with Remi, she didn't trust his rep.

Eden did say she'd never seen him like him the way his now.  What bit didn't she get that he wanted to be on his own.

I don't know if she realises that just turning up to a termination/abortion clinic doesn't mean she'll have it that day - not if they are a caring and responsible one.  They'll want to talk to her about it and make sure she really knows what she is doing.  Is she still having her counselling?

Leah, and sorry to be stereotyping, but she is becoming a typical Greek mama, interfering in their child's (OK this time nephew's) life.  Theo is an adult but she's guilt tripping  him into coming home.  He can see problems, but not to what extent they may be.  I suppose he could come back for a night or two and leave again?  Neither Leah or Justin can see the other's point of view as they are both standing  by their child/nephew.  Justin doesn't want to rock the boat with Ava as he feels he ought to be a proper dad, but he's blinded and can't see what others see. Then, maybe he does,  but doesn't want to accept it. Btw do we know if Ava did rescue her scrapbook from the kitchen bin or the outside bin?  Leah did make the point that they gave Theo another chance when he was causing trouble so Justin had no argument there.

I suppose it did need Roo, as an outsider, to check up on Ava's account and what she is posting about Theo. Certainly not innocent musing about him, calling him her boyfriend and using the photos she took in Theo's bedroom.  Will Leah be brave enough to show Justin?

Oh Tane, gorgeous and sweet as you are, you are utterly blinded! I know we're supposed want to love Felicity but sadly all I can see is a selfish attention seeker who forever wants things her way or no way. (Admit my judgement's a little coloured but I know an IRL Tane/Felicity set-up, only the other way around, it's awful!).

Ava is Scary with a capital S! Sadly the thing that really smacks in this storyline is the typical societal approach of 'all boys bad, girls never lie' trope, I hope Leah confronts both her and Justin because this really isn't normal teenage crush behaviour, we're straying into a 'Fatal Attraction' style beginning.

From a different angle, I know 99% of teenagers are bull-headed and ignorant 'know-it-alls' but Ava is putting herself in a dodgy situation with the online thing, she might think she knows how to handle real men but, actually she's clueless to the danger of the pics really. (I know not all men are like that btw but it only takes a dodgy person of either side for it to turn bad.)

An online safety story would be a good idea, shame Ava is so petulant and unlikeable that I don't think viewers atm would invest in her as such. ?

EDIT: I know this is possibly an unpopular opinion but I hope Bree does go through the abortion and, preferably with no crazy over-emotional regret decision in later times. The situation she's in emotionally is not a good base for motherhood and I think the paternity shadow and it's baggage would be really damaging. There is no shame in abortion and it's a woman's right to choose and, for a good chunk of women, they don't regret that decision and it would be nice to see the show reflect that.

I found Tane's bemused reaction when Felicity proposed quite amusing.  And to me this isn't working for it at all.  It's her taking the easy way out.  The problem is he's not really in a good place at the moment so I can't blame him for accepting even though I think it would be better if they just focused on their relationship and cohabiting rather than marriage.

I guess there's an argument that Leah and Roo have it in for Ava but I'm trying to understand what Irene's issue with her is.  Doesn't seem as though she's party to what the inner circle know.  I don't agree with what Ava's done and do actually have sympathy for Theo especially having to move out of his house but Leah has really bugged me.  Shades of Miles and Elijah.  Roo has gotten on her nerves as well because to be frank it's none of her business.  I don't buy that she's doing it because she's Ava's tutor.  She's only looking out for Leah.

The way Ava was acting when she rocked up at Kirby's almost oblivious to what she's done, I am leaning towards she needs to talk to somebody, although at least she wound Kirby up.  I do still have sympathy for Justin, especially the realisation of what Ava's been up to.  I still like her and don't think she's irredeemable.  I think Leah moving out is a good thing but I don't see how Justin's going to be able to manage Ava and reign her in.

I'm in agreement about Bree and also hope she doesn't go through with the pregnancy.  Can't see any good coming from it and think she's too good for both Remi and Jacob.  It was a shame Remi can't leave for good with Eden and Kirby.

I suspected Mackenzie would struggle without Dean (and Ziggy for that matter).  It's sad that Gabe felt he had to leave because he didn't want Mackenzie to go through having to see him succumb to the big C.
