Adam never had a girlfriend after Marilyn, which suggests they didn't see him as boyfriend material. It seems a bit odd that they kept him around because he quickly degenerated into an annoying layabout who people tolerated rather than liked.

I feel like Carly was quite fickle during that period too. In the space of a year or so, she was infatued with Matt, got engaged to Andrew Foley, dated Adam, threw herself at Grant and then very quickly married Ben.
