Well that's an OK debut for Temptation. Hopefully when people notice that Eddie Phillips and Livinia Nixon completely lack charisma they'll stop watching. Good to see Home and Away beating BB, as it should be. And BB coming last out of the 4 major networks. It warms the heart.

What we are watching

Daily Telegraph (Sydney)

1 June 2005

Reality has beaten "reality" in the ratings. Yes, really. The 7pm weeknight version of Big Brother was not just beaten by Home And Away and Frasier repeats in the most recent ratings week - it was also beaten by the ABC news.

The news bulletin reeled in an average 1.12 million viewers across Australia last week, versus Ten's average of 1.11 million for the Big Brother shows on at the same time. Still, Ten can afford not to be too upset about it all.

The only viewership the network really and truly cares about is the youth demographic so sought after by advertisers - and despite Big Brother's figures falling slightly, Ten still had its best result with the 16 - 39 year old demographic in a State Of Origin week since OzTAM ratings began five years ago.

1 ..... State Of Origin ..................... Nine ..... Wed ..... 812,745 viewers

2 .... Desperate Housewives ......... Seven ... Mon ...... 563,868 viewers

3 ..... 60 Minutes ......................... Nine ...... Sun ..... 544,919 viewers

4 ..... The All New Simpsons .......... Ten ....... Tues .... 487,446 viewers

5 ..... Lost .................................. Seven ... Thurs ... 470,324 viewers

6 ..... National Nine News .............. Nine ..... Sun ...... 456,821 viewers

7 ..... Graham Kennedy ................ Nine ..... Fri ........ 453,222 viewers

8 ..... Seven News ....................... Seven .... Sun ..... 444,070 viewers

9 ..... Everybody Loves Raymond ... Ten ....... Thurs ... 423,188 viewers

10 ... CSI ................................... Nine ...... Tues .... 422,801 viewers

Nine won the week in Sydney (May 22 - 29) with 32.1 per cent of viewers, followed by Seven (26.9 per cent), Ten (20.4 per cent), ABC 14.9 per cent) and SBS (5.7 per cent). Source: OzTAM

Kennedy still beats them all

The Advertiser (Adelaide)

1 June 2005

IT was a week dominated by the Schapelle Corby verdict and the death of Graham Kennedy.

Nine's tribute to Kennedy was the highest-rating program on Friday night with 185,000 viewers - even giving Big Brother a rare belting (140,000).

Live coverage of the Corby verdict averaged 79,000 viewers in Adelaide (43,000 on Nine and 36,000 on Seven) - around 32,000 more than usual for Friday late mornings and early-afternoons. The telecast had a combined peak of 126,000 viewers (71,000 for Seven at 1pm and 55,000 for Nine at 1.40pm). In truth the Corby figure would have been vastly greater as people meters monitor only viewing done at home, not in work places.

Nine won the weekend and weeknight news bulletins, with Seven's Today Tonight again topping last week's 6.30pm slot for the 166th survey week in a row.

However, Nine will have been buoyed by Monday night's figures for the new-look Sale of the Century - Temptation.

According to preliminary figures, the quiz show returned with 172,000 viewers - ahead of both Big Brother and Home and Away - while Temptation's lead-in program A Current Affair actually shaded long-time conqueror Today Tonight for the night.

These figures could change when updated by OzTam overnight but you can bet Nine and Seven executives will be keenly watching how the ACA-Temptation combo progresses over the course of the week.

Nine won its seventh straight primetime week with a 29.2 per cent share of viewers, with Ten (25.4) edging out Seven (25.2) off the back of its Big Brother-saturated programming.

Nine had six of the week's top 10 shows in Adelaide with local show Postcards coming in fourth (195,000).

Seven had three inside the 10: Desperate Housewives, Lost, which had its best figures for weeks with 195,000 viewers, and Thursday's My Restaurant Rules (172,000).

Adelaide's win in Sunday's grand final of My Restaurant Rules drew 157,000 viewers - to 169,000 for Big Brother and 141,000 for 60 Minutes.

Sale of the Century is show of the moment

1 June 2005

Sydney Confidential, Daily Telegraph

A return to ye olde days has proved the way of the future for Channel 9, with the return of it's classic gameshow Sale of the Century blitzing the opposition on Monday night.

A massive 1.62 million viewers tuned in to see the first episode of Temptation, the re-branded version of the old ratings warhorse, which was retired at the end of 2001, says TV Editor Eleanor Sprawson.

This was well ahead of Seven's Home and Away -- usually the reigning champion in the 7pm weeknight timeslot -- with 1.27 million. ABC News was third on 1.13 million and Ten's Big Brother on 1.10 million.

The success of the show, hosted by Ed Phillips and Livinia Nixon, meant a rare Monday night ratings win for Nine, which has suffered because of the popularity of Seven's Monday night juggernaut Desperate Housewives.

Seven's drama was still the number one show of the night with 2.09 million viewers, but Nine won the night overall with 28.9 per cent of the national audience against Seven's 28.2 per cent.

The return of Sale of the Century was no doubt going to be big. I don't see the ratings holding up for it though. Give it a big first week, and then the ratings will drop. The 7pm slot is much more competitive now though with Sale. I still think Home and Away will win it though.

Yeah I agree Ben....I think people will soon get sick of "Temptation" or the new Sale of the Century. Keep hanging in their HAA!!!

It's like Big Brother. It's first week it slaughtered Home and Away in the 7pm timeslot. It was only another week when Home and Away regained it's territory. The same will apply with Temptation. Home and Away provides more consistent figures, and whilst may lost the odd week here and there, will ultimately be the overall winner of it's timeslot. :)
