I think we should seriously campaign for Five to buy the rights for older episods.

PS: Would they buy them from Seven or ITV?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I would assume Seven, but it would depend on the type of contract ITV had/has with Seven. Living TV(?) have already repeated a lot of them, but the rules may be different for another terrestrial network like Five.

Does anyone know if Living showed the ITV-format episodes (ie. already edited by ITV with the same cuts and end-of-part captions in place), or had they bought the clean 'master' copies?

I believe Five have a plan for Home and Away, so as they will catch up with Australia exactly, ie. we will have six-week Christmas breaks, or else we will be maybe one week behind. This would explain why they are so determined to show one episode of Home and Away everyday, even if it's Christmas Day or if they have a football match to show (remember it was on at 3.15pm one day). it doesn't benefit Five that they are so behind Seven, I think they want to catch up, so they viewers won't know what is going to happen in six months time.

With regards to rights issues to old episodes, ITV are very bitter and I don't think they would give up the rights without a fight.

Also, did Ireland really overtake Australia at one point!? That's incredible. I can't believe I didn't know.

I think it was at the start of the 2000 or 2001 season, RTE ended up ahead of Australia by one episode. They've dropped that many episodes since that they're now over five months behind!

I also heard a rumour that during the dark days after H&A had been cancelled on ITV, RTE had to show a blank screen (or something similar) on digital platforms so viewers in Northern Ireland couldn't tune into the episodes (via Sky) and watch them before Five showed them! (Most people in Northern Ireland can pick up RTE on analogue anyway!)

It would be good if Five got to the point when they showed the episodes the same day as Australia (effectively 10 hours or so behind), so seasonal episodes (Easter, Australia Day etc) would coincide.

No I don't think that RTE were ahead/caught up with Aus in 2000/2001, because from the start of the Underwater credits until 2004, I watched H&A on RTE (I can pick it up on analogue). And i remember trawling through Sally's Diary on the official site, looking for spoilers, back in the days when it was updated.

A few months ago, RTE ONE and TWO were added to Sky in Northern ireland, and I think Five have forced them to blank out Home and Away, even though they are now only 1/2 weeks ahead. i don't have Sky anymore so I don't know if they are currently blocking H&A for NI viewers.

And yes I agree with what you said about Five screening H&A 10 hours behind Oz, hopefully this is what they intend on doing.

The kids channel Trouble showed old episodes a few years ago.

Five better take a break if they start to catch up!!!!! That's what lost ITV their rights! I couldn't cope with 6 months off again!

I found a massive double sided Will/Vinnie poster from when the show first went over to five! I have no idea why I kept it, I didn't even watch then! But I'm so glad I did!! Just need to decide what side to stick up now! :D

Trouble and Living TV brought the master copies. They didn't show the edited ITV copies.

I have a feeling that five is trying to catch up with RTE so that they'll both be able to show the same episodes on the same day.Not too long ago RTE used to be 9 weeks ahead of five but by the end of next week both channels will be more or less on the same episode as RTE is taking a break from H&A for one week due to the Galway Races.

I think that both channels will try to work together like RTE and the BBC do for Neighbours. !!!

That would be a good thing if RTE and Five worked together so that both could catch up with Oz. RTE don't treat H&A that well, considering that Home and Away is RTE TWO's top rated programme other than football (GAA & soccer) and Desperate Housewives, which finished a while back.
