The kitchen really did seem to shrink to half the size but was the door still there that led into the back room Andrew Foley used to use? When he was kicked out of there because it was a health hazard people walking through the kitchen, he could have just moved to the other on Marilyn used to use. But I guess that had no idea it existed then

I can only assume that having the counter at the back of the set made it easier to film in as they'd just move the freestanding tables out of the way rather than have to move booths/walls.
