Cushion acting

Why is it that in nearly every Oz soap when people sit on a sofa they hold a cushion in front of themselves? Without fail whether it's a male or female actor you see them hugging a cushion. I don't think I've ever seen anyone sit hugging a cushion in real life! I wonder, is this learnt in acting school as cushion method acting

I often sit on a couch and hug a cushion if there's one there. Maybe it's an Australian thing?

Not just Aussie soaps they do in it in British soaps too.

Too right John I think one of the main reasons that cushions are made is to have cushion fights

No the reason might be, why the actors hold the cushions while sitting on the sofa, is it gives them something to do with their hands while doing the scene. Actors sometimes find it arkward to know what to do with theirs hands when acting.
