Why do they have such a long Christmas break in the UK, when we're around 6 weeks behind Australia?

Also surely it makes more sense to have our break in our summer as people are less likely to watch TV when the weather is better or if they're away on holiday etc. If they made said break almost as long as the Aussie summer break (assuming we take 2 weeks off for Christmas) there's no danger of us ever catching up.

This is the burning question. I just don't get why in the UK they don't air the entire season as it is meant to be aired. I know they like to stay a little behind due to channel 7 scheduling which can be anywhere from 4 to 6 eps per week but that is easily managed. They used to have a summer break but then it fell into November instead, I can't remember exactly when but I think around 2012. The UK and Ireland used to be one day behind a long time ago but then 7 did air Monday through Friday then and it left the eps out of sync, a Friday cliffhanger airing on a Monday etc.

The UK could easily remain two weeks behind and air the show as a full season February through December.

For me I treat it as a Winter finale

You're right. I've no idea why they don't do this. I'm pretty sure NZ is a week behind Aus. So they're definitely able to manage. NZ being geographically closer to Aus should make no difference in this day and age so I've no idea why they don't do it.

It would be easier for Seven to write in a UK cliffhanger in Summer as well, rather than have to have two big ones just six or so weeks apart at the end of the season.

I assume it's all legal based as I notice Ireland is still always a day behind the UK.  Also, Seven will have plotted the UK cliffhanger some months in advance.  I believe the scenes we're seeing now were filmed back in March but aired in Australia in August.  So the UK transmission break will have been locked in for some time.

I still to this day have no idea how Ireland ended up a day behind the UK when back prior to Channel 5 days Ireland was the first country in the world to air new episodes that eventually ended up in same day airings. Taking out the Channel 5 first rights clause it still doesn't make sense as the show didn't go off the air for over a year like it did in the UK. I wish I could figure that out.

I guess it's OK now as they do have a cliffhanger specifically plotted for the UK instead of pre 2012 when it went on break with Alf saying clean that up ya flamin gallah! There just wasn't any incentive for maybe new watchers to think ohhhhhh when is the show back? I need to see what happens next. Now at least that is the case.

Because they have a long Christmas break in Australia, and because if they had the break in the summer instead, then we'd be about 12 weeks behind for a larger chunk of the year.

Honestly, I lobbied long and hard for them to just have one break at Christmas like Australia does rather than peppering breaks throughout the year so we got further and further behind. It really baffles me how many people seem to want to go back to that!

I personally would rather the break ran over the UK school holiday between mid July and the first week of September and instead we stayed on air over Christmas, where there's a bigger available audience.

I assume, however, whenever Channel 5 take if off, RTÉ is forced to do so too so they have to hunt as a pack.

Do Seven have the Commonwealth Games rights next year as that might complicate things?

EDIT: Yes, they do.  So a shorter season next year.
