Isn't there only a 3-week break in the UK?(Although I agree, we are ridiculously far behind as it is.)

Ah, probably. I guess I mis-remembered it, as we'll probably be 6 weeks behind when it return here?

Does anyone know why the gap was closed in the first place? Wasn't there a stage in 2008 or 2009 where the gap was only 5 days or something?

I think 5 felt a whole year to be behind was a bit too much so they started closing up aka it was shown in the Christmas period. However it did backfire by 2008 when the show was only a week behind and there was no way to go ahead.
