Why does Irene NEVER get screentime?

If Irene went back to the way she was after 2004 it still wouldn't be good enough. As alexx and ryan say, this is when she slowly started to become less of a character. Also, Lynne McGranger is so good at comedy, and its a shame. This seems to have been neglected since the late 90s!

I think her scenes with Roman (Conrad coleby) in the late 2007, early 2008 season were pure comedy... It is a shame that they did not use the character of Roman better too...

There are more characters than Irene that have been wrongly used. But the difference is that the others have been written out after a while instead of using them better... But Irene/Lynne McGranger seem to be saved from that. I don't think it is any worse to neglect Irene, than the neglection of other characters.

I suppose it isn't any worse, but the neglect is more obvious due to her history and because there is a greater investment there.

I don“t agree with you. Exploring new characters and defining them is also a big investment... especially for the future...

the problem the last 3-4 years have been the very undefined characters. They don't have a history storline, we don't really know who they are. They are changing personality, age and history just to fit the storylines. That is the reason the characters are so hard to invest in these days (2012). That is also the reason why it is hard to invest in couples and so on. A death doesn't feel that sad anymore. And I don't think it is only because it is overdone. We don't feel for the characters anymore... because they are so undefined and under developed.

I'd make a really bad writer as I don't really know what to do. :P

I guess they need to have her interact with other characters outside of the Diner? She could pop into people's houses or meet them at the beach?

I think the best thing would be for her to have lots of scenes with Marilyn, Alf and Leah so we can believe that she cares for them as they do for her. Interaction with all younger characters would be great too. I wish there was a core group of teens and one of them lived with Irene and the 'gang' could hang out at Irene's and they'd get to know her, respect her and go to her for advice. Sadly I don't think the writers are interested in doing anything like what I've mentioned.

I wish something would change though.

As discussed, they can't just give Irene a storyline as they have done in the past. Just giving her cancer, or having her briefly involved in the people smuggling storyline is not enough, and just serves to keep us quiet for another couple of months.

I love Irene (or I used to) and I feel that they need to start focussing on her as a real person, or they should write her out. They really should have given the job of taking care of Maddy to Irene, and have Roo and Harvey fostering Spencer. But even that isn't really enough, as Irene should have a life of her own too. I'd doubt they want to introduce another male character of Irene's age group at this point, but why not have regular guests for her to have a relationship with. Perhaps this love interest could be someone she meets at an AA meeting?

I don't really know what else, and I would say the writers are stumped too. But it really shouldn't have got to this point where Irene doesn't have a personality any more.

Three I think.Finn, Damo and Nathan.I don't think Paul is actually hers.

They could easily bring Nathan back.Wasn't he in jail?He can be someone out to get revenge on the braxtons. Not even joking seeing some sort of Braxton relation seems to be the only way to get on the show and have decent airtime.

I don't think she can complain if she's not happy because that would put her job at risk and she's at least got job security even if she's basically standing around.

I thought Lynne said months back that some stuff would be happening but it hasn't so maybe I'm imagining it.

You're not imagining it!

She has hinted on twitter several times months back that she had storylines coming up! She told me herself on twitter.

She also did a Digital Spy interview in December 2012 where she clearly stated that she had "a good chat with the writers" and that we may be seeing some of her kids returning.
