Shame that Ailsa learning of her mother's death is flatly contradicted in 2000, when we're told she died while Ailsa was in prison and she wasn't allowed to attend the funeral.

I had completely forgotten Emma's 'sympathetic' announcement that Ailsa's mother had died. What a terrible way to find out, even if you weren't close. It was also strange to hear Emma say that her own mother (Ailsa's sister) had really put on weight. Unless she went on a crash diet before her appearance in 1990, I'd say the writers forgot that detail too!

Yes, that occurred to me as well.Guess Emma was being grumpy.Or she's really hard on people's weight.

Well...the first episode today wasn't what I was expecting, I didn't look at the synopses so expected The One With The Ironman Competition to actually feature the Ironman competition rather than a load of people talking about it.It didn't help that I found myself getting more involved in the Al/Sophie stuff than the ostensible focus of Craig-McLachlan-as-Grant-Mitchell getting a flat tyre and Doctor Doom and a guy who looks like Luke Cunningham(watch on Monday)drinking coffee, I found myself disappointed that plotline was left dangling, since I was rooting for Bobby and Matt to help her at the end.Obviously from around the time Adam took over from Martin as the local scam artist, seeing these episodes back to back it seems like he's got more of an edge to him, maybe because he comes over as more intelligent.Ben comes across as Dave's willing partner in crime here too, he seemed to get more aloof as the storyline went on.

I have to say, Channel 5 have been making some good choices about which episode to focus on:Instead of Dannii Minogue's first appearance where she appears for a few seconds at the end, they show the next one where she actually gets something to do.And instead of showing an ordinary episode where Tom keels over at the end, they show the one dealing with the aftermath. It felt pretty raw in places, with Steven, Bobby and Alf's reactions being particularly telling.(Although Ben and Grant seemed to stand there doing nothing for an awfully long time after being confronted with a car crash and two teenage girls begging for them to help.)The subplot of the kids carrying on with their dance lessons without knowing what's going on didn't seem as jarring as it could have been and Marilyn was pretty good here.Man, Sally could be a stroppy madam at times when she was young...

Especially as the picture of Grant is from the episode of the competition.

Just realised that this means we Virgin Media viewers still get to see Dale's episode on the TV. Which is good. Watching on the PC just isn't the same, and kind of defeats the object of the whole strand of programmes.

Quick recap of which episodes for week two can be found where...

Monday, 1993:

On Television: Lynne McGranger's first episode playing Irene and Bobby's funeral

Online & Virgin Media: Dale's Cot Death

Tuesday, 1994:

On Television: Shane & Angel's holiday and Curtis & Shannon's romance

Online & Virgin Media: Roxy (remember her?!) and James The Mentalist. Who needs Zoe/Eve?

Wednesday, 1995:

On Television: Shane & Angel's wedding and Bobby in the fridge

Online & Virgin Media: Chloe's beating at the hands of her dad

Thursday, 1996:

On Television: Shane dies and Fisher & Marilyn get married

Online & Virgin Media: Michael's funeral. Lost for words how this didn't get in!

Friday, 1997:

On Television: Irene's birth and Saul & The Commune fire

Online & Virgin Media: Marilyn's pregnancy

I'm not surprised Michael's funeral didn't get in. Marilyn's still in the show which would have persuaded the vote and Shane was an icon.

Um, did I blink and miss an episode or was the one where Marilyn arrives in the bay online? The first mention of her by Lance was that she had left! Just answered my own question.

A lot certainly happened between the pilot and the next episode shown! Alf and Alisa marrying and Alisa pregnant, Roo going from hating her and plotting with Morag (finding out about her being in prison for murdering her dad) to being her friend. Nice to see the 'old' young Roo (or Kanga as Bobby used to call her)., wondered if we would.

We saw when Bobby found out Morag was her mother, but when did she find out Donald was her father? The Ironman episode we saw had him being called her 'old man'. Can't be many people out there who don't know Terence Donavan (Al Simpson) is Jason's dad.

If I'm being honest, it's a little disconcerting watching single episodes, you're just getting into the story when it finishes, then a new one is shown.

Had completley forgotten how frizzy Maz's hair used to be! It seemed that she was renting the beach house from Pippa as she was handing back the keys before taking back Sally and Murray (who he again?) for their dance lesson. Sally did appear to be a bit of a madam, throwing a strop at the drop of a hat. Did like her realtionship with Lance though. Loved how Carly and Lance fitted up Martin with the bunyips.

I see the usual Summer Bay magic worked on Emma going from a troubled teen rebel to a normal teenage girl.

Great seeing that hamburger bun telephone in the diner after all this time. :D

Ae we going to see early appearences of Colleen?

H&ALover, Fisher is revealed as Bobby's father to the audience a few episodes after this, but it's about a month or so later before Bobby finds out herself.

I'm not surprised Michael's funeral didn't make it, but it is disappointing. Like Dale's death episode, I wanted viewers old and new to see such a well written and acted episode of Home and Away.

The 1990 "third" episode, incidentally, is the earliest in the collection with Debra Lawrence as Pippa. Disconcerting seeing her talk about Tom though, it feels like they're two different characters!

We have Meg's death tomorrow. If current viewers watch just one episode, make it this one - the highest-rated in H&A history.
