Skylover Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 The whole Pippa thing is so weird - when I first started watching the Early Years I felt that Vanessa's portrayal of the character was somewhat cold, but having seen all her episodes now I actually feel like Debra's Pippa is much colder. I think DL Pippa was more bland, she was just a 'mum', whereas VD seemed to bring a unique, quirky aspect to the character. The main thing both versions share is their 'middle-class' sort of personality. IMO the fact that DL stayed for much longer (4x VD stint) clouds people's opinion.
beau_t Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 I was just watching 585 on Youtube. VD's final line was "I must go." How fitting. When does Michael arrive?

Well said Edward ***applauds*** I find Vanessa so much more versatile and dynamic as Pippa than Debra....and I have watched enough of both to have justified my opinion. Debra's Pippa certainly had many fine qualities and she probably outshines Vanessa as a mother figure, that much I will acknowledge. However, as you pointed out, Vanessa brings out quirkiness and other dimensions that I think Debra's portrayal rarely displays.... In terms of fans, Debra still overwhelmingly has the numbers; but isn't it interesting that some on this forum (who had never known Vanessa as Pip) have warmed to her since TEY commenced (including yourself maybe??) Another factor is Vanessa's smile - on the final opening credits with her, how lovely is her smile??? Would melt anyone's heart
Dibble Investments Inc Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Fisher getting drunk at the Reception was priceless!!! He was almost human for awhile
matty Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 I'm begining to wonder about Adam, especially as he's around for just short of another 900 episodes. When you realise that Adam leaves the same time that Jack arrives and they start building the mid-90's gang, you realise that's quite a period of time. I kind of joke about it in the 1989 Year Summary regarding Matt who managed to be around all year, yet did nothing of any note and I wonder whether Adam is going to be like that. True, but I wouldn't say that Matt did nothing of note in 1989. There was that storyline about his brother, involving Fisher and Simpson.
matty Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Even though you knew it was going to happen, was it strange to see an 'imposter' suddenly playing Pippa? Alexx says she was just chopping vegetables in the kitchen, I can't wait to see it. Was she facing away from the camera then suddenly 'hello FakePippa!' Lol, yes it was like that. She was facing down, and Steven, Paul and Emma were watching tv. Steven then went over to her and started talking about going to the shops. She then looked up, and was a 'shock' moment. I don't know if it is just me, but did anyone else think that it was a bit too "forced"? It was like they were trying to shove it down our throats that there is a new Pippa. Her scene in the shop with Bobby and Marilyn was just pointless, in my opinion. And Ryan, yes, that last line from VD was very apt and poignant. She'll always be my favourite Pippa.
Jeremai Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Grant is a good character but it's not too dissimilar to Henry in Neighbours. I feel like I'm watching Neighbours when Grant's scenes occur..... As soon as he laughs I think, "Henry!" That laugh just seems more suited to Henry's character than to Grant's. Is Adam's life just aimless?? Matt & Marilyn have jobs and at least some direction. Adam beach bums and seems to have no interest in anything, much less getting a job..... There seems to have been a bit of a shift in his character. When he first arrived he was the rich boy with the yacht. It seems like when Lance and Martin left they then saw him as a replacement comedy character.
Skylover Posted February 17, 2012 Report Posted February 17, 2012 Ugh, I think Steven is my least favourite character of the current cast. He is just so annoying - how he went round to Fisher's to yell at him, it was so out of order. He's so arrogant and annoying!

He is just so annoying - how he went round to Fisher's to yell at him, it was so out of order. He's so arrogant and annoying! I must admit that it was totally out of character for a normally mild-mannered lad.....Fisher's explosive reaction to him was well justified - the only explanation for Steven's outburst was that he was preserving the memory of Tom and to do this, he needed to ward off any successors to Tom (even if it was Fisher). It makes me wonder how he'll react to Pippa's future husband???
