This thread is very interesting, I'm from Australia and absolutely love Eastenders my dad bags me out for watching it yet he got sucked into it by the Syed and Christian saga and the Lucas thing. ANd he's very embarrassed when he has someone over and he goes through the recorded programs and they see all these episodes of Eastenders he's like "Adam watches that ****." He then goes on and tells them about the gay muslim and the serial killing reverand and tells them how hillarious it is. Although my mum had to tell me that it was too real and depressing with all the aus pace storylines at the moment.

I find myself relating to this thread a lot. If it ever came up in conversation, I use to have to admit I watched it still, but now before people have a chance to give me a scathing comment, I tell them that yes I watch it, and I am that sad actually yes. I also get berated for watching Emmerdale as its the 'old peoples' soap - even though Eastenders is Faaar worse imo. The thing is though, I can see why people think watching home and away is sad, especially with the recent episodes I've seen (Ruby's driving instructor storyline and John and Gina 'break up' for starters). Saying this though I will keep watching it because its a habit I find comforting lol, but it wouldn't be a conversation starter thats for sure.

Australians tend to say: what a load of rubbish. English people tend to say: I watch Neighbours. But some people surprise me and say 'oh, I love Home and Away too!' e.g. my best friend of 5 years who I'd never told! She read my fanfics and laughed her head off (that was the desired effect)

I tend to find that it is more the posting on a Home and Away forum, of which I was a one time very active moderator, is a greater source of derision than the viewing of Home and Away itself.

I tell people all the time that I love H&A and some say oh me too and others pretend they havent heard me but I like H&A at the moment.

I always get 'oh I fell away from that' or ' I ain't seen that for ages'

I get alot of negative comments when I say I love Home & Away. They say oh thats a stupid show, or I used to watch it but now think its crap. I usually ignore them or just tell them that they are missing out. I'm not afraid to say I love home & away and have been watching it for more then a decade.

Let's just say this has been my biggest secret in the last two years. I am a part of several other forums

It's never been a secret that I watch it. Throughout early high school, I used to watch literally every soap, and most people knew. By the end of high school, I only really bothered with Home and Away and Hollyoaks.

The other week though, I went out with my closest, oldest friends (We only manage to see one another every so often, since post-high school we all went in different directions) and we were discussing what we'd been doing whilst we were getting ready (Our night was much more interesting than this perhaps sounds) and I mentioned I'd watched H&A. One of my friends said "You still watch that?" and the other said she'd seen bits of that and watches is occasionally.

I tend to find it's the older people that are shocked by it. They mention something that's happened on Eastenders, or Corrie, or even Hollyoaks and I'll say I don't watch them. They then ask if I watch any TV and I'll mention I like to watch H&A and they always seem shocked. It's quite odd.

I've never made a secret of watching it though, nor do I shout it from the rooftops. If a conversation about TV shows comes up (which it rarely does in coversations I have) then I say I watch it, but it's not something I make a point of bringing up. I don't start conversations with "I was watching Home and Away last night....." but I have absolutely no problem with people knowing I watch it.
