cadyctslover Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 i was out with some mates from work last week, on the way i happened to mention i was watching some TV before i left. when i said it was H&A she said "you watch Home and Away? wow that really is trash. i thought you were going to say Neighbours, that would have been alright" she wasn't even being sarcastic! it's something i've never really understood that the show has this reputation for being really bottom of the barrel when compared with Neighbours, Emmerdale or Hollyoaks, all of which i find quite difficult to sit through. in my opinion - although something can be said about the storylines being a little too slow this year - the production values, acting, writing and sense of history are wonderful and make it feel less like a soap opera and more like a high-quality drama. although people who will bad-mouth the show tend to have never watched it. so i would be interested to know what sort of reaction the fans on here get if they mention they watch H&A to friends? and any theories for why this reputation has been gained?
callyha Posted November 28, 2010 Report Posted November 28, 2010 Ok I'm glad someone has started something like this off. I get mixed feelings when I saw I love Home and Away. Some say its good to watch, the storylines are good etc and others say that its rubbish and say why dont I watch more British soaps. I tell them that H&A is amazing and I love it and that Corrie, Eastenders, Emmerdale are Cr*p and are really boring. Then there is one perosn I know who I can talk to all the time about H&A, but I follow AUS pace so I'm ahead, and its great to torment her
Julez Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 People say to me: "Oh, that's your low-brow indulgence, is it?"
alexx Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Home and Away these days has a bad reputation for being superficial and cliched. I get the feeling most people think it is all based on love and romance and hot girls and boys - so pretty much exactly how these last few months have been unfortunately. That is why I'm disappointed with the show, it really is becoming exactly what those that hate the show think it is and that is a shame because it used to be a strong emotional drama, now it is a romance driven program with an emphasis on lust, love and teenage melodrama. At one point I would defend the show, but I have to say with the current Bay of Love format I have to agree with those that think it is 85-90% superficial and 'bottom of the barrel'.
codyw1 Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 I try to avoid telling anyone anything. ;) If I did, I'd say "Only the old ones". In which case they'd think me even sadder, probably.
alreetlike Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 Ha, I also get criticised for watching it.. by people who watch literally EVERY other soap that's on TV.
Slade Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 I try to avoid telling anyone anything. ;) You know what? That pretty much sums up how I feel. I remember having a driving lesson with my instructor years ago and we were talking about TV programs and he asked me which ones I watched and I mentioned Home and Away and he said that was so sad. Since then I don’t really make a point of telling people I watch the show, even people who like soaps in general.

Furzie Posted November 29, 2010 Report Posted November 29, 2010 The current home and away season I have to say is very disappointing. I just seem not interested to watch anymore. I wish they would please improve it!!! I remember showing a few promos (the channel 7 ones) to a couple of friends from work a years ago, 2005 season it was, and they actually didn't believe it was home and away! They said whenever they watched it in the 90's it wasnt like that! I assumed that the promo made it look very good -(as of course they usually do!) I have mentioned it before to other people whenever TV shows topics come up and I usually get laughed at!
Zetti Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 I tell people all the time that I love H&A and some say oh me too and others pretend they havent heard me but I like H&A at the moment.
