Seven Network on the warpath?

Dear Home And Away fans,

I have noticed some H&A (and other videos from TV) uploaded by users being removed from YouTube due to copyright claims by the Seven Network (or NineMSN for Nine Network programs). There are many videos of this nature and a lot of them have remained on YouTube for years.

Unfortunately today, I have fallen victim to this kind of attack. The clip of Alf exploding into flames at Frank when he and Roo come over in Episode 83, to tell him they have proposed marriage, had been disabled due to a copyright claim by the Seven Network. When I logged into YouTube this morning I got a full-page warning notice saying that one of my videos was a copyright violation and to not upload copyrighted videos in the future.

Everyone uploads clips from TV programs etc. and seem to get away with it most of the time.

As a precaution, I have removed all the Alf videos from my account that have received higher than 10,000 hits.

I noticed the remade "Rape Dungeon" ones (copied off my uploads then voiced over with grotesque parody dialog) originally uploaded by "Doodleburger" were removed due to copyright claims by the Seven Network, when they made the news. I assumed they made the complaints rather on defamation grounds, as suggested in some TV blogs, and many of you may imagine how pissed off Ray Meagher may be, about Doodleburger's remakes.

Can someone shed some light on why the TV networks find it important to remove clips of their programs (in our case, clips from Home And Away)? Don't these clips actually help promote their programs??

*UPDATE*

Both Today Tonight and A Current Affair are running a segment on the Alf stalker videos. The motive behind the Seven Network's having my undubbed videos removed remains a mystery. Defamation lawyers and a company that works for celebrities who surf the net for what people say about them, were interviewed in the Today Tonight segment. My understanding is, it is the dubbed ones posing a defamation issue, with brands being damaged. I still don't know why my undubbed version about Frank & Roo's proposal was removed.

but it is true that they are allowed to remove anything if there is copyright on them, I have been exposed to the same thing that I get a warning that I will not be allowed to post it on the Web

But there are so many of them posted by so many users, where would they find the time to complain about them all? How much time and expense is involved in lodging complaint forms on each and every one of them?

I guess if they targeted one of the Alf videos, probably what they were trying to do was trying to cut the source of the clips. Albeit it was uploaded perfectly innocently, and I for one watched them 2 or 3 years ago, though now superceded by the fact that I've now got the actual episode complete, and the way to do that most easily would be to claim copyright of the clip. If they have shown no interest in any of the other clips, my guess is that they were trying to stop people taking that clip and then have it dubbed, rather than a crackdown etc.

Mind you Alf explodes in 1730 so I wonder if that will catch the eye of doodleburger and his crew.

Just to bump this, since ownership of C5 passed to Northern & Shell, there has been a significant blocking operation on YouTube, right down to videos of the credits.

yeah but don't they (Channel 7 or whatever) understand that h&a episodes are only being uploaded to Youtube so people abroad can view the show...?

they're not doing anything illegal with them, just allowing others to view them!

all the uploading episodes to youtube etc would stop if au.tv.yahoo made watching h&a episodes on their site available to everybody, not just those people living in australia!

^ I love watching H&A at UK pace, not Australian Pace mainly because its too confusing and there's no subtitles on YT but I think people should be able to watch it on YT should they choose to/

The new C5 owners started this blocking operation before Christmas. They were systematically blocking all YT H&A episode postings going back years.

If people think that what C5 (UK) are doing is too draconian, you just wait until the new UK legislation, designed by that friend of big business Peter Mandelson, hits the statute books. Your own ISP will be required to monitor your downloading habits on behalf of the various media empires (and then take appropriate action if necessary.)

I'm not in favour of getting lots for free: for instance, if I want a CD, I'll pay for it rather than download it. But what is about to happen (and to some extent has already begun) is being driven by very rich businesses dictating to governments.

i know right! they've deleted every episode from 2007/8 that shows the full credits from that era, and every video that just showed the credits. i really don't understand it because the episodes without the credits remain
