Can't think of a particular reason why I've created this topic right now

I'm wondering if anyone, with a better memory bank than mine, can recall characters of, lets say. good reputations and kind hearts, who have left the bay having done harm. I don't mean unintentional harm, I mean that in order to satisfy the plot, and ease their departure, they have been given a character transplant just before they left so that they could knowingly cause harm.

This is a tricky one. The closest to the above description I can think of is Brodie Hanson who in early 2004 had an affair with Alex Paulos who was Hayley Smith's boyfriend in 2003 and early 2004.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I feel Dani Sutherland one of those characters who was changed to satisfy the storyline (and fans). First made out to be the problem when it came to Kirsty & Kane, then made to be a total bitch at the end.

I don't think Dani was made into a bitch. She just followed her ambition, and her path in the future obviously didn't invove Scott, which in the long run worked out perfectly for him as he ended up with Hayley. I also disagree with Brodie being given a character transplant, she just realised she had always loved Alex which was hardly surprising. If anything Alex was the one who was turned bad in order to write him out.

The only examples I can think of are: Tracey Turner, who literally changed moments before she was killed; Josh West, although his transformation into a villain was much more gradual; and Jesse McGregor, although again Jesse always had a dark side to him ever since his early storyline with Kylie, and you could argue that Jesse's actions that led to Chloe's death were bad but his character wasn't necessarily bad.

I'd say they did it with Rhys and Shelley.Shelley walked out on her family because she'd had a row with Rhys, so her children would take his side and refuse to live with her(and thus stay in the show). Then when it was time for Rhys to leave he cheated on his new wife with Shelley, although at least he had form. There have been numerous examples like the Alex and Brodie one above where characters have left under a cloud in similar circumstances but it has actually seemed in character(Jude and Shauna, Kim and Kit, Harry and, er, no-one).

It was seriously out of character when they did it with Natalie though.A year earlier, the idea of her having an affair was played for comedy value because it was so ridiculous. Then she suddenly announces that she slept with someone else a few months back and her husband isn't her child's father.I never saw her as a bad person but from comments it sounds like a few other people did.

When Steven left for the second time, they turned him into a fairly bitter and vindictive person as a result of losing his job over the Selina business and he ended up alienating pretty much the entire town, including Pippa, even though he did stop to save Sally's life on his way out.

Likeable semi-regular cop character Chris Hale was turned into a hit and run driver to give him an exit, covering up his own crime and others and being a bit sinister towards Jesse.

You could possibly count Duncan, who spent his last few weeks on the show deliberately upsetting everyone he talked to so Alf would want rid of him, but that wasn't particularly out of character either.

I seem to remember Shauna falling in love with Flynn, which turned her from Sally's best friend into Sally's worst enemy - even though Sally and Flynn hadn't really starting going out yet. Then Shauna left under a huge black cloud for daring to compete for a guy with the almighty Sally Fletcher.

I think Sally and Flynn had been on a few dates by that point, they were definitely considered a couple. Also, Shauna was engaged to Jude at the time which meant his family and friends turned on her as well(especially after the upset indirectly caused Jude to have a motorbike accident).

I can think of a few Neighbors characters that have been written out like this, but yeah I was just about to say Shauna. They kinda did it to Kelly too, she dumped Travis and their wedding arrangements in order to fulfill her career aspirations, without so much as a onscreen goodbye. Though it was written with a lot more poignancy.

Looking to very recent times I think that, in a way, Annie could qualify.

She didn't do anything bad but the way she treated Romeo and then left wasn't very nice and, I think, out of character. The old Annie wouldn't have given him the six week challenge to make her want to stay; and I don't think she would previously have left after their declarations of love etc.

I feel that both the plot and Annies character were manipulated to allow Charlotte Best's departure.

I agree with that also to not be in contact with Romeo after she left didn't seem right either. I also thought Melody's departure was daft although they kind of did the opposite with her mum - a formally malicious character turns nice and the Melody leaves with her.

I thought Danni leaving fitted with her character but I was surprised at how the other characters spoke about her when she left. i didn't think it was surprising she wanted to leave a town where so many awful things had happened or see anything wrong with chasing a career
