When I watched the episodes dealing with Hugo's 'death' I thought that the only person who knew the truth was Angelo. Now it seems that Alf knows as well.

How did he get to find out? Perhaps I missed an episode?

When Hugo went into witness protection he insisted that Alf should be told the truth, he wanted Alf to make sure Martha got on with her life - we saw Alf being told about the plan at the police station in 4998.
