MarcJ Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Guess I've been living under a rock ... but This morning on TV (the early episodes) they were talking about Roo's mother Martha (had no idea that was Alf's first wifes name) For some strange reason when Roo had her baby I was under the impression she had a different name. And when Martha moved to the Bay a few years ago, her name puzzled me abit (meaning I kept thinking what Roo named her was better) Question : Am I wrong ? Was she named Martha when Roo had her ? And if so ... Did her adoptive parents call her something else and she reverted back to the name Martha ? As its very rare that Adoptive parents keep the same name as the birth one
Barbara Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Roo named the baby Martha after her mum. As far as I know her adoptive parents didn't change her first name, they only changed her surname. I don't see why she would have changed her first name back to Martha when they died anyway. Sometimes adoptive parents will keep the child's name and sometimes they'll change it.

But I was adopted and my parents only knew my 'birth name' because the nurses forgot to take the name of the crib when they came to get me. Yes they would have found out months later in court to do all the legal stuff.

I think it is so wrong when first names are changed by adoptive parents, it's the only thing the adoptee has left from it's natural parents and then it's taken away. Plus if the mother or father wants to trace the child at a later date they have less of a chance.
