Do You Consider H&A A Soap Opera?

I think of it as a soap opera.. and the only one I like. I especially hate UK soaps. Eastenders and Coronation Street are both horrendous.

Snap.

I consider it a Soap Opera. I list it amongst the UK's 6 major ones: Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Home and Away & Neigbours.

H&A is the only one I watch (Although, not too long ago I was an obsessed Hollyoaks fan.)

Oh, and my other reason for thinking of it as a soap opera is that it kind of goes on all the time, rather than having series. I know there are breaks during the year, but I don't think of it as being a series. Think someone called it an "ongoing series" a little way up the thread. That, to me, is a soap opera.

To me H&A is definitely a soap!

I class it as the same as all the other UK shows I watch , and goes on 5 days a week like most other soaps as well.

The only reason I consider it a soap, as someone mentioned above, is because it airs 5 days a week whereas series just air once a week. And in my opinion it does have more of a teen drama feel than a soap opera feel. If you look at the Bold and the Beautiful, those are seriously ridiculous storylines and sometimes the scenes are acted out way too dramatic. Like when someone hears shocking news and they zoom in on the actor's overly shocked face with dramatic music. H&A seems a tad more realistic.

I would say it's a bit on the border of teen drama and soap opera.

I don't really.. Soap operas are way more slow and "fake" in my opinion. One entire episode can be of two people standing in a room having one conversation. HAA is a lot more lively, and seems more real in a sense. Maybe because of the locations.. And the storylines. It's not ALL drama. There's drama, but there are happy moments as well. The characters seem more real than in many other soaps. Those other shows really don't stand a chance in my opinion;)

But maybe I'm biased:P

I agree with that :)

the only Soap Opera i'm watching /watched so for me Soap Opera is H&A. My sisters watches Day's of our Lives Feux du lamour in French and whenever she sees H&A is on she useally comments do they all sleep together cause it easily gives that impression for an outstander. :)

I think that's an important point to make. I've heard that from a lot of people who dont watch in recent years. The show has pretty much revolved around love, lust and romance over the last few years, so I'm not surprised, but its a shame that's the impression it gives off, no wonder it isn't taken seriously anymore. Hopefully the show is going to take a new direction, they started off on the right foot this year, focusing more on characters, giving the adults more to do etc but there is still quite a bit of room for improvement Imo and axing the focus on romance in favor of a variety of intertwined character lead plots should be the first thing they do.

Of course it is. Being a soap doesn't automatically equal "Crap".

My main problem with the soap opera genre - which is why I don't watch any of them anymore and would be unlikely to begin a new one - is that they operate under a Catch 22 principle; they're not a cop show or a sci-fi show or an action show, they're about nothing except the characters. Which is fine... except soaps are essentially designed to run forever, which means sooner or later you're going to end up with a show that has none of the characters you watched for in the first place, and is effectively a different show using the same name. Which is when I tend to lose interest...
