The Boring Austin Family

Agreed, David Jones-Roberts appears unable to act. Still, I'd like to see him in something un-soapie to see if there's an trace of talent. Luke Mitchell can't seem to act either but people don't pick on him as much because he's more traditionally good looking (if that's your type). But again, I wonder if it's the material because he does look silly playing a teenager (and no doubt feels it too).

One of the few actors who could really act was Jeremy Sims who played Gardy. An example of someone who could rise above their role, although he was given decent material. And okay, Tood Lasance was a decent actor too, though Aden annoyed me.

I think a lot of people get liking a character mixed up with an actor playing their role with talent. A crap actor may have a decent character and be considered a fantastic actor just because their character was popular; at the same time an otherwise talented actor may play a dismal character but ever get noticed due to the poor material they have to work with.

This is so true. My favourite TV show is The Wire. There was a character on that show whose defining trait was his spectacular obnoxiousness. A lot of fans found the character very unlikeable and said that the actor sucked and the way he played him was a large part of the reason the character was unlikeable. Then the producer / director took the actor with him to his new show, had the actor play a character who was actually (gasp)... a good guy, and people suddenly started saying "wow, who knew this guy could act?"

when the Austin family were first introduced, i really hated the character of Xavier and found the acting of David Jones-Roberts to be seriously below the standard of the show. and although i've only slightly begun to warm to the character after a year and a half, there can be no doubt that David has really stepped up to the mark with his acting.

but.... i really, really do not like Gina. the character is so boing and i can't see any of the warmth that a mother figure on the show should have. i've read on countless occasions that Gina Todd is a fantastic actress, but i just can't see it myself :(

at least Hugo has gone now, it's just a shame that Brendan is not a regular.

There is much doubt for me, I can't see any improvement at all. Now that they're trying to develope the Xavier character, I just see the actor struggling more & more.

Which The Wire character was that?

Ziggy Sobotka. I always actually liked the Zig, or at least understood him and felt sorry for him. It was obvious his exhibitionism and attention seeking was a product of his father caring more about his union than he did about Ziggy. Plus a lot of his antics ( eg the drunk pigeon) seemed to be an effort to get people laughing with him rather than at him like they normally did. A lot of people simply thought he was an obnoxious jerk though. I haven't actually seen Generation Kill yet (it's on the to do list), but going by reviews James Ransome got a lot of plaudits from people who didn't think he had much acting chops previously.

Yes, I've always disliked Gina too but I'm not sure it's Sonia's fault but the way Gina is scripted. She's a cold, hard woman who seems rather oblivious to the emotional needs of her children. She's had moments of warmness but they've been brief. That said, not all parents are warm and she's not an unrealistic character - just not very likeable.

I think, and I hope, that we will see more warm sides of Gina coming out as time goes on. Like a lot of H and A characters, she has to go on her own journey; remember Irene and Fisher were disliked for quite a long time as the "villians" of the piece. Already we have seen her great connection with Romeo's sister, so I think things will change.

Oh, yes! I completely forgot about Mink. I liked her, they should bring her back.

but i don't see Gina as a character i love to hate. she isn't a villain, she is a very dull character with literally no point.

as i've said before her coldness really puts me off. with other hard-nosed characters we are often allowed some insight into why they are the way that they are, and can sympathise with their upbringing or their state of mind. with Gina, apart from moaning at Xavier or flouncing off after a minor tiff with John, has no purpose.

as regards to her connection with Mink, i really didn't see much input from Sonia Todd. she basically told Mink that she needed to let go of her bitterness and move on, with all of the emotion coming from Matylda Buczko.

I don't see Gina as a dull or cold character. I think she's great and I reckon she could become a loveable and mainstay character.
