It's just a repetitive cycle. Two regulars are a couple and a guest comes between them for a short time. Unfortunately the guests are usually infinitely more interesting than the regular couple, but they are vilified and run out of town, because said couple are "meant-to-be". (grabs sick-bucket)

I think guests are too often 'bad' guys. It would be nice once in a while that there was a good guest. Someone who does something good or helps people, does a little mess, nothing big, everything will be okay and then (s)he leaves. But I guess the bad ones are more interesting, that's why they do it.
