Ok im kinda having a rough week so i decided im just gonna come on here and have a little winge to make myself feel better. Im getting really sick and tired of Rove (Live) sticking it to Home & Away on he's show. Its not constant but it is quite a bit. The other night He said something about the acting being horrible. He did everything he could to make fun of Sally's Departure. There have been numerous other times over the years when he has said something negative about the show. I used to be a fan of Rove's. Not anymore. I know Rove isnt the only one that makes jokes about H&A. It seems that the topic is a running gag for laughter to a lot of people. So i have something to say, Home And Away is in its 21st year now. It has won more Logies then any other Australian Drama and its also very successful in other countries. Ill admit that there has been some shakey storylines and even actors on the show. But in my opinion, Home And Away has come leaps and bounds over the years and should be congratulated. Its a part of Australian History. I probably sound very pathetic right now but i have one more thing to say haha... ROVE ! Why dont u stop talking smack about Home And Away and take a look at your own Network. Neighbours is much much worse in my opinion. :)

Rove is an Australian comedian. Home and Away, and Neighbours, are Australian soaps. Soaps are traditionally a source of comedy because their format is, stereotypically, unrealistic, over the top, and relies more on good looks than acting ability. Now, I agree, both Home and Away and Neighbours have progressed a lot from those stereotypes. They both offer quality storylines and acting when the occasion calls. But these stereotypes are ingrained and the audience - people who watch the soaps and people who don't - are usually aware of them. Rove can reference the character of Sally Fletcher or Alf Stewart and be confident that his audience know who he is talking about, even if they don't watch Home and Away. In fact, especially if they don't watch the show, because then they are more willing to rely on the stereotypes that he is exploiting for a joke.

I don't think he's being malicious when he makes off-hand references to characters like Alf or Sally. He's just working with a stereotype that the majority of his audience is likely to understand, and "get." When he talks about Joey and Charlie, there is no difference in him making a joke of the storyline than their is to all the news and current affairs freaks making it a serious "issue" - except that that's much more offensive, in my opinion, because it's actually inciting people to be homophobic by implying that there's something wrong with Home and Away portraying a homosexual relationship. Rove wasn't doing that, he was just being immature about girls kissing - another ingrained stereotype that is often played for laughs.

The recent things he said about Lincoln and Jodi was topical humour. To him, they would be in the same category of targets as Schappelle Corby's mother screaming "WHERE'S MY CAMERA!!!" - just some random, half-funny thing that happened in the news, and that can be exploited into being something that is briefly hilarious when exaggerated and overblown into a joke.

If anything, I'm glad that Home and Away gets mentioned on Rove, because that means that enough people recognise Home and Away and its stars for it to be worth making jokes about. There's no point making jokes about things that half the audience (or more) won't get. So, I take it as an indication that, whether people like Home and Away or not, they still know what it is and they still know how to take a joke about it.

And yes, he was married to Belinda Emmet.

~And, for the record, Neighbours gets joked about plenty. Harold, Dr Karl, and Toady are regular references, because people know who those characters are. In fact, I believe they had a whole segment about Harold and Lou's "homosexual relationship" after the Charlie and Joey story. It was a joke. It was funny. It wasn't meant to be offensive in the least.
