That was just the first sign of the show's self-destruction. While the first half of the series was pretty well adapted, when they got to the Kyoto arc, (Volumes 4-6), they chose to move several events to earlier in the timeline and rob them of all significance in the process (ie, the pactio with Nodoka at the end of the kissing contest, as previously mentioned), and compress everything else into about two episodes. A complete disappointment.
