Hi folks,

I've decided to get back to watching home and away after an 8(ish) year absence. I watched a couple of episodes the other day and didnt know where I was !!

I wonder if someone could answer a few qestions for me just to help me catch up.

Is there maby a documentary or a season catch up show I could see to get me up to speed?

What happened to Don Fisher? He used to be quite a big character in the show. Actually I could ask what happened to the entire cast because I didnt recognise anyone but that would be asking a bit too much lol. Also wondering what happened to Vinnie (The V man) as I remember him particually. There was also a new family that had just joined before I stopped watching, the Sutherlands? What happened to them?

Basically I need a summary of what has happenned in the last 8 years!!! I know I'm asking a bit much but I really want to get back into this show again and any help or links to a summary would be much appreciated !!!

I can help answer a few questions. All this info is from the BttB main site :)

Donald was having problems at the school with the increasinly aloof behaviour of Angie, which included buring down Don's office and faking an assault. Don soon announced that he was intending after Alf's operation, to move up to the Whitsunday's to be with June and he left the bay soon after.

In the 2002 finale, Leah received a phone call saying that Vinnie had been killed in a fire at the prison. With his body unrecognisable, Jesse soon began to wonder if he had survived and although his first apparent reappearance turned out to be a guilt-ridden Ralph, in 2004 Peter Baker confirmed the rumours were true. Vinnie had given evidence against some of the people he was in prison with and his death had been faked so he could go into witness protection. It was supposed to be temporary but now it was clear it wouldn't be safe for him to emerge and he had asked Leah and VJ to join him. Leah considered it but by then she was seeing Dan Baker and elected to remain in the Bay.

If you wanna read about all the Sutherlands, just go here and find them: http://www.backtothebay.net/characters/cat_s_z.shtml

Hope that helped a bit.

Filling in a few gaps, Don made a few return appearances after his retirement and in 2007 was pointlessly brought back as a bankrupt divorcee who made a failed return to teaching and was last reported in England with an implictly terminally ill Marilyn.Rumours keep appearing that they're going to bring him back and sort the mess out but nothing as yet.

In case it's not clear, Vinnie married Leah, who I think he would have just started dating when you stopped watching. She's still in the show, along with their son VJ(Vincent Junior), and Vinnie was wrongly jailed for a fraud committed by his father.

Kirsty, the middle Sutherland girl(older than Jade by ten minutes, although later events called that into question), returned to the show last year after a three year absence and, at UK pace, is currently living with Irene. The rest of them all moved to the city one by one and as far as we know they're still there.

There should be plenty of information on Donald, Vinnie, the Sutherlands and most if not all of the other 2000 characters on the main site.(Just click on the Cast link at the top of the page.)They used to have some decent year summaries as well but the links to them seem to have vanished so I'm not sure where they are now. They've got some decent summaries of every year up to 2007 at Summer Bay Journal.

EDIT: I tell a lie, I've just checked and the BTTB year summaries are back at http://www.backtothebay.net/episodes/years/index.php.There's a few years missing and there's an incredibly long review of last year around on the site somewhere which doesn't seem to have been catalogued but it should give you an idea of what's been going on.

Donald left in 2003 if I remember correctly, the school had a big leaving ceremony for him. He has returned a few times temporarily, the last time being in 2007. His teenage grandson Seb lived in the Bay for about three years, but left in 2004 to go and live with Donald.

As others have said Vinnie's death was faked, which was revealed by Peter Baker in 2004, and he is currently under witness protection.

The Sutherlands arrived in 2000 and pretty much dominated the show for four years until they all left within a few months of each other, although the mother, Shelley, left a couple of years before the others. Jade turned out not to be a Sutherland after all, she was swapped at birth with Kirsty's real twin Laura DeGroot. Dani, the eldest, had a few relationships and after her final one ended she left to live in Sydney. Kirsty married Kane, the man who raped Dani, and they went on the run from the police in early 2005 after Kane was framed for armed robbery by his own father. Kirsty and Kane both returned in 2008, with their young son Oliver, but Kane has left since and they have broken up. The Sutherland joined forces with the Hunter family in 2004 when Rhys Sutherland married Beth Hunter, however Rhys left Beth for Shelley eventually so the Hunter/Sutherland family didn't last for long.

The Hunters are now all gone, but they were a big part of the show between 2003 and 2008. The mother Beth had a relationship for two years with Tony Holden, but she was killed in a car crash in 2007. The eldest son Scott was Dani Sutherland's fiance, but they split and he fell for Hayley Smith in 2005 and they had a baby, Noah, and then moved to France. The eldest daughter Kit came in and out of the show for four years. She eventually left the show in 2007 with Kim Hyde, who was Rachel Armstrong's husband at the time. Kim and Kit had been together on-and-off before Kim married Rachel, but when Kit gave birth to Kim's son, it spelled the end of Rachel and Kim's marriage. The middle child, Robbie stayed for three years, and left in 2006 with his wife Tasha, who was one of Irene's foster kids for a few years. The youngest son Henry only stayed for a year or so, then left to go to a dance school somewhere. The youngest daughter Matilda was arguably the biggest character of the family. She left in 2008 and now lives in Perth with her boyfriend Ric Dalby, Alf Stewart's grandson. Matilda was close friends with Belle Taylor. Belle also dated Ric for a while.

Now to Sally! Sally left last year after 20 years in the Bay. In 2002-ish(I think) she met Flynn Saunders and they fell in love and married in 2003. In 2004 Leah Patterson-Baker gave birth by surrogate to their daughter, who they named Pippa. In late 2004/early 2005 Flynn and Sally moved into Summer Bay House after buying it from the Hunters, and fostered Ric Dalby and Cassie Turner, effectively becoming the main family on the show. Ric was revealed to be Alf's grandson, after he accidentally killed his father Owen, who was a son Alf and his former fiance Viv had given up for adoption when they were very young. Cassie was an orphaned granddaughter of a friend of Colleen's. Flynn got cancer and died in 2006. Then Sally fostered Rocco Cooper, a young gang-member who was under the influence of his evil older brother Johnny. Johnny forced Rocco to stab Sally, and she nearly died. Rocco was then murdered by Johnny's gang and his death was framed on Ric, but eventually Ric was cleared. In 2006/2007 Sally had a relationship with Rachel's older brother Brad Armstrong, and they almost married, but Sally left him at the altar, and few months later Brad left. Cassie started a relationship with Brad's best friend Henk, a man who had raped Rachel when she was a student. Henk got Cassie pregnant, but also infected her with HIV. Cassie left to go travelling with Sally and Pippa last year, and she had her baby a few months later. Ric also left last year, with Matilda.

Martha who is currently on the show, is the daughter of Roo Stewart, Alf's daughter. Roo gave her up for adoption as a baby, but after her adoptive parents were killed when she was 18, Martha tracked down Roo in America, and then Alf brought her to live in the Bay in 2005. About six months after Martha arrived, the Holden family moved to the Bay. They consisted of Tony, the father, and his two sons Jack, a cop, and Lucas, a schoolboy. Lucas left after 2 and a half years in 2008 to go to Uni in Sydney. Jack and Martha fell in love when they met and married in 2006, then split up soon after that. They spent all of 2007 almost getting back together, bu not quite. That year Jack married Sam Tolhurst, but in 2008 she was revealed to be in cahoots with Johnny Cooper, and helped him hide after he tried to murder Sally, by stabbing her a second time. Sam then murdered Johnny after he threatened to reveal her past as a drug-dealer to Jack. Then Sam lost everything when Jack found out, including their baby. Sam committed suicide and tried to make it look like a murder and frame Jack and Martha, but they were proven innocent, and got back together after this and remarried. However Martha was pregnant with Roman Harris's baby, who she had been dating at the time. Martha also was diagnosed with breast cancer, and because of this she lost the baby. Martha recovered from cancer, but at the end of 2008 Jack was shot dead, and it appeared to be by his colleague Angelo Rosetta, however that may be proven otherwise. Tony started a relationship with Rachel Armstrong at the beginning of 2008, after he lost Beth, and her marriage to Kim broke up. They are engaged to be married and Rachel is pregnant with their child.

Irene was looking after the Smiths around the time you stopped watching. Their father Ken was killed after a car fell on him while he was working on it. Will had a relationship with Dani Sutherland for a while, but he eventually got back with Gypsy Nash and the had a baby and married, then left the show in 2002. Nick Smith dated Kirsty Sutherland, then Jade Sutherland, but eventually he left in 2003 after being cast in a movie. He now lives in Hollywood. Hayley married her true love Noah Lawson in 2004, but he was murdered that year by a raving lunatic called Sarah Lewis, which kick-started a two-year saga in which Sarah's lover Zoe McAllister(real name Eve Jacobsen), terrorized Summer Bay under the nickname "The Stalker". Zoe vowed revenge on Summer Bay after Sarah committed suicide after killing Noah, and she commited a series of crimes, killing a few minor characters, including Rachel's mother. It' was a HUGE storyline with even I don't have the patience to tell. Anyway, as I said earlier, Hayley eventually got with Scott Hunter, by way of Kim Hyde, and left for France in 2005. In 2003 Irene took in Tasha Andrews, an orphan who could barely speak English at the time. Tasha was real free-spirit, but got caught up in a cult called The Believers, and was raped and impregnated by one of their members. We don't know who it was, but at the time it was believed to be her boyfriend Jonah. This has since been proven false since Jonah changed his name to Michael and had relationship with Martha in 2007. Tasha left the Bay in 2006 with Robbie Hunter, who married her and decided to be a father to her daughter. Irene also took in Kirsty and Kane for a while in 2004/2005 before they left the show. In 2006 she took in Belle Taylor, who had left her adoptive parents and come to the Bay to find her birth mother. Her mother tuned out to be Amanda Vale, a woman who came to the Bay in 2005 to Leah's wedding to Dan Baker. Amanda was Dan's scheming ex-wife, and they had a son Ryan together, but Dan was not Belle's father. Belle's biological father has never been revealed.

I know I've given you a lot of info, but it's only the tip of the ice-berg. Eight years is a long time, and so much has happened, with so many characters involved. Hope I helped a bit.

WOW, some fantastic replies there, thanks so much for taking the time to write them !!!! Its alot to take in but I guess thats to be expected. The main shock for me is that Kane returned and ended up getting married

Thanks Dinerlandlord for a really detailed reply, you're quite right, 8 years is a long time and theres loads of catching up to do...the scary thing is, it doesnt seem like a week ago I was watching it !! How time flies.

Thanks again, I'm going to re read all the replies to absorb it all in !!

Quite a few good and not-so-good (to be polite) characters were killed off during your eight year absence too. Ailsa died of a heart attack, Charlotte died, Flynn Saunders died, Josh West died, Ken Smith died, Angela Russell died, Jack Holden only recently died, Noah Lawson died, Dan Baker died, Diane's daughter died 1 episode after the 4000th episode, Beth Hunter died, Sam Tolhurst died, Vinnie went into witness protection, but officially died in 2005 whilst in witness protection, if I've missed any, then I apologise. 2007-2008 were the worst for characters getting killed off.

I'll tell you a bit more about the current characters, as they are the ones you will be watching, and my last post was mostly about the former characters who were there in in the years you weren't watching.

As I said before Belle came looking for her mother, Amanda, and Irene took her in. There was a tug-of-love between Irene and Amanda for Belle's affection for a long time, as Irene felt Amanda wasn't fit to be a mother to Belle, which was sometimes the case. When Belle first arrived she started dating Ric Dalby, but their relationship only lasted a few months. Then in mid-2006 Jack and Martha's wedding was attacked by Zoe, and a huge gas explosion killed a few people including the main detective in Summer Bay, Peter Baker(Leah's brother-in-law). Leah and her late husband Dan found out that Peter had a secret teenage son called Drew who came to live in the Bay after his father was killed. Belle fell for Drew, but Amanda also set her sights on him, and she and Drew embarked on a steamy affair behind Belle's back. This led Belle to disown Amanda, and dump Drew. Belle then dated Lucas Holden for a few months, but eventually cheated on him with Drew and the two got back together. In the meantime it was revealed that Peter was actually alive, and had been in witness protection the whole time. He and Amanda then started a relationship and got married in 2007. Belle's aunt, Kelli Vale, arrived in town hell bent on getting revenge on Amanda, and she set Amanda up to look like she was cheating on Peter, and ruined Peter and Amanda's wedding. Shortly after that Amanda left town, but Peter realised she wasn't cheating and followed her to live in Sydney. Belle stayed in the Bay to finish Year 12 and live with Irene. After Peter and Amanda left Drew's mother Jazz Curtis arrived and stirred things up in the Bay, dating Tony for a while, and trying to scam Drew out of his inheritance, but she left after a few months. Belle and Drew stayed together for all of 2007, but they had some hassle at the end of the year from Drew's enemy Dom Moran, who was obsessed with Belle. Belle finished high-school, but Drew had already failed and dropped out, so he decided to repeat Year 12 in 2008. Early in 2008 Drew's uncle Dan Baker was killed in a rock-climbing accident in America, where he and Leah had planned to emigrate to. Drew was left distraught, but Belle seemed more interested in her career at the newspaper at the time, which caused irreparable damage to their relationship. They had a horrible break-up, and Drew left the Bay to go live with Peter and Amanda. Jazz had returned at the time and repaired her relationship with Drew. She was one of the suspects in Sam's murder case, but she was innocent. She dated Miles for a while, and worked as the high-school secretary, but like before she left after a few months. Belle then started working at the Diner for a while, along with Aden Jefferies, and they became attracted to each other. They started properly going out in mid-2008, and their relationship has been a roller-coaster ride ever since.

On to Aden. Aden first showed up in 2005 as Cassie Turner's new boyfriend, when Cassie broke up with Ric Dalby for a short time. Aden was an outgoing rugby player, and a good guy on the surface, but underneath it he was quite a bad boy. His older brother Sean attacked Ric and nearly killed him, because Ric had injured Aden during a rugby match, and might have cost him his career. Sean was sent to prison for attacking Ric, and as far as we know, he's still there. He also has another older brother called Justin, who we have never seen, but it has been mentioned that Justin ran away from Summer Bay when he was younger. Aden then went off the scene for two years, but returned in 2007 as the main bully in Summer Bay High. He bullied Geoff Campbell mainly, but also picked on Annie Campbell, Lucas Holden, and Rory Tolhurst. Late in 2007, Rachel and Brad Armstrong discovered that they have a teenage half-sister called Tam, as a result of their father having an affair. Tam and Aden dated briefly, but Aden humiliated her by recording them making out while Tam was drunk, and sending the video all over town. In early 2008 we started to see more of Aden's home life, and how his life had been affected by his father being an alcoholic. About a year ago Aden had a massive row with his father and revealed that when he was a young child he and his brothers had been sexually abused by their grandfather, which explained why Aden was so troubled all the time. Aden only confided in Rachel Armstrong after he had been hospitalized when the old Diner collapsed on him. Rachel arranged for Aden to live with Roman Harris to get him away from his father, and to get counseling. Aden's best friend was a guy called Axel, who tried to rape Annie's friend Melody Jones at a party Nicole threw in Roman's house. This drove Aden into a rage, and caused him to hate Axel. Jai Fernandez became friends with Axel, but Axel was killed in a hit-and-run by Aden's father Larry, while Jai and Axel were joyriding on a stolen scooter. Aden kept nearly starting a relationship with Belle, but he couldn't be with her properly until he told her about what his grandfather had done to him. In the Olympic cliffhanger last August, Aden discovered that his father had also been sexually abused by his grandfather when he was a child, which caused Aden to lose his mind completely, as he couldn't believe his father had failed protect him from his grandfather when he was small. Aden kidnapped Rachel(by the way, Rachel gets kidnapped A LOT, I think it's happened 4 times now), and eventually Belle, then tried to murder his father, but was stopped by the police at the last minute. Aden was then sent o a psychiatric hospital for a few weeks to recover, and was paroled due to him being insane at the time. IN the meanwhile, Belle broke up with Aden as she was so scared by what had happened, and she started dating Angelo Rosetta instead. However, Belle and Aden couldn't stay away from each other and they cheated on Angelo. While this was happening Belle had been investigating a local development site which was believed to be a toxic waste-ground, and possibly a cause of several cases of cancer in Summer Bay, including Martha's. Angelo found out about Belle and Aden cheating and got really angry and threatened Belle. Belle was then attacked in Irene's house, making it look like Angelo was guilty, but it was in fact the developers who didn't want her sniffing around. They also ran her off the road in her car. In the 2008 cliffhanger Belle was badly injured by a car crashing into a building where the school formal was being held. After all the injuries Belle gradually became addicted to painkillers, which s where her storyline is now, as is Aden's.

Aden lives with Roman Harris, who arrived in the Bay at the end of 2007, and bought the Diner from Leah. Roman dated Rachel very briefly before she got with Tony. He also had a short relationship with Martha, before telling her to get back with Jack if that was what she wanted. Martha went back to Jack, but discovered she was pregnant with Roman's baby. She lost the baby in the Olympic cliffhanger. It was a girl, who they called Lindsay. Roman has another daughter, Nicole Franklin, who he fathered as a teenager. Nicole came to live with Roman on the same day Aden did, after she ran away from her mother's house in Sydney. In mid-2008 Charlie Buckton came to live in the Bay and she and Roman had a relationship until the end of the year when they broke up, due to Roman's lack of commitment, and also the fact that he was still in love with Martha. Roman used to be in the SAS, and one of his former colleagues was killed under his command, which led the colleague's younger brother Elliot to come to the Bay looking for revenge. Elliot started dating Nicole to get to Roman, and in the Olympic cliffhanger he tried to kill Roman, Nicole, and Geoff on a deserted island, which was featured on the show again recently. Roman saved Geoff and Nicole, and Elliot was sent to prison. Recently, Roman has accepted he and Martha will never be together, and is now dating Leah. Nicole and Geoff fell in love on the island and had sex for the first time, but Geoff is very religious, and decided he and Nicole could never do it again until they married. They tried to make their relationship work but recently they have broken up because they are just too different.

Geoff and his sister Annie arrived in 2007 after Martha was left stranded on their farm. They were orphans who lived with their extremely religious grandfather Bruce, who wouldn't let them go to school or interact with people in the town. Sally was very concerned by this and eventually convinced Bruce to let them go to Summer Bay High. Geoff got bullied by Aden for being so religious and innocent, and Annie struggled with schoolwork because she is dyslexic. Geoff is a great rugby player which caused even more tension between him and Aden, but led to him forming a close bond with Tony. Geoff and Tony being so close made Lucas Holden extremely jealous of Geoff, and even he started giving Geoff a hard time. Eventually Bruce died of a heart-attack, just when he and Geoff and Annie had reconciled their relationship. Irene then took Geoff and Annie in at the end of 2007, much to Belle's disgust at first, but now she is like a big sister to them. Geoff dated Annie's friend Melody for a while in 2008, but they eventually split because of her overly-protective and religious mother. Melody was put in the same mental hospital as Aden after Axel attacked her, and Aden brought her back into everyone's lives. Her mother Christine thought she was possessed because she had an eating disorder and tried to perform an exorcism on her, which led to Miles taking her into care. Geoff maintained his close bond with Melody, which caused friction with his girlfriend Nicole. Melody couldn't accept that Geoff didn't love her, and she went off the rails at the end of 2008, taking drugs and imprisoning the whole school in the formal building by locking the doors, then wandering into the road, causing Kane to swerve his car to avoid her, crashing into the building and badly injuring Belle, and burning the building to the ground, with the students trapped inside barely escaping. Melody was expelled from school, but at least she accepted it was over with Geoff. She ran away to Melbourne, but Miles and Charlie tracked her down, then she repaired her relationship with her mother and left to live in New Zealand. Annie hasn't had many storylines, but her first love was for Lucas Holden, who didn't feel the same, because he was about five years older than her. She then fell for Jai when he arrived in mid-2008, and they have been together ever since.

Miles arrived at the end of 2007 with a big secret. He was Sally's twin brother! His name Miles Copeland, is where Sally got the name MilCo for her imaginary friend as a child. It turned out the man Sally thought was her father had actually been her step-father (which is where she got the surname Keating from), and her parents had split up while she was very young. Her father took Miles with him, and her mother took Sally. Her mother and stepfather were then killed in a boating accident, and she was adopted by Pippa and Tom. Miles had a much harder life, with his alcoholic father, who dies when he was in his early 20's. Miles qualified as a teacher and married and had young daughter. Sadly, Miles and his young family were on holidays in Thailand in 2004 when the tsunami hit, killing his wife and daughter. This is where Miles met Jai, who's parents had been killed by the tsunami, and miles promised Jai he would take care of him. However, Miles fell into a deep depression, and when he returned to Australia he became a homeless drifter, and lost contact with Jai. After he and Sally bonded, she decided to leave Summer Bay, and left the house and caravan park to him. He dated Jazz for a bit, and then he asked Morag to help him track down Jai. He found Jai and convinced him to come live with him in the Bay. Jai, like Annie, hasn't had many storylines since he arrived last year. Miles was the object of Leah's affections for a while, but when Kirsty came back to the Bay and split up with Kane, Miles made it clear Kirsty was who he wanted to be with, and they have dated on-and-off ever since.

Alf and Colleen discovered they are half-brother and sister early last year, after a time capsule was unearthed that contained a diary that revealed the secret affair between Alf's father and Coleen's mother. Morag was not amused! Alf had a relatonship last year with Bridget Simmons, a woman who came to the Bay as brief lover of Tony 's, when Tony cheated on Rachel during the Olympic cliffhanger. Bridget became a close friend of Martha's after she revealed she had also suffered from cancer. Unfortunately Bridget was actually a con-woman, and was trying to scam Alf out of money, and Leah out of her life-insurance payment from Dan's death. Rachel exposed her and she was carted off to jail early this year.

Ruby and Charlie Buckton are the stepdaughters of Morag. They came to live in the Bay after Morag decided to marry her old flame Ross Buckton last year. Charlie was angry with this at first, as her mother had only died shortly before this, but eventually she warmed to Morag, and Ruby always liked her. Ruby brought her older boyfriend Pat with her to Summer Bay, but Pat eventually did the right thing and broke up with Ruby. Charlie fell madly in love with Roman, but was left heartbroken by the end of their relationship. At the end of last year she had a brief no-strings-attached relationship with Angelo Rosetta, but when he was revealed as Jack Holden's killer, she was left even more disillusioned with men. Lately, Charlie has been having feelings for another woman, Aden's friend Joey Collins. Ruby had a brief school-girl crush on Miles, and since the end of last year she has been in a relationship with Xavier Austin, although they had a rocky patch when Xavier's ex Freya showed up in town for a while. Ruby and Charlie's father Ross now lives in Sydney with Morag, where he receives special care for his battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Xavier and Hugo Austin arrived in late 2008/early 2009. They are the nephews of Tony Holden, and effectively just replacements for Lucas and Jack Holden. Xavier is dating Ruby and bit of a trouble-maker, but he is very caring towards their other brother Brendan, who has autism. Hugo is very mysterious, and has a lot of secrets which are yet to be revealed.

Ok I know I said I'd tell you a bit about the current characters, but I realise I have gone overboard. It's not my fault I just love blabbing about this show.

What he said.Except take the bit about Sarah committing suicide with a pinch of salt, because even though everyone says it it didn't happen in any of the episodes I saw.(The whole episode was really confused but it looked as though she was shot by the police and Eve even said that's what happened.)And I don't remember Annie being dyslexic either, she just left school when she was eight and didn't go back till she was fourteen so she was a bit behind for a while. And as far as anyone can tell Keating was Sally's mother's name, her stepfather was called Wilson.

And Rachel's actually been kidnapped FIVE times.

Well excuuuuuuuse me!!!!!

Only joking!

I ranted for so long I'm surprised I didn't get more things wrong. I genuinely thought I was right about Sally's stepfather's name, and as you said Sarah's death is open to interpretation. I really thought Annie was dyslexic as well. Or maybe I'm just lexdyslic and I'm getting all confuzzled.

As for Rachel (aka kidnapper-bait), is it really five times?

1) When she first arrived and that guy had Leah hostage and took her hostage too.

2) Crazy Charlie (aka gay-for-Kim).

3) Mumma Rose.

4) Reverend Hall.

5) Aden.

Oh my god it is five times!!!!! We should start a betting pool on when she'll be kidnapped next and who by! I'll give you 3-to1 odds on Colleen kidnapping her in the 2009 cliffhanger!
