Getting people into Home and Away

I don't know many people who watch Home and Away outside of my family either. Whenever I mention I watch the show I get a laugh and comments like "that's an odd one", and not too long ago, when it came up in conversation, someone who hadn't watched the show in years asked me if Bobby and Ailsa were still in it, lol, and a few people have said to me that they used to watch Home and Away but always preferred Neighbours. Sadly, I think a lot of people here view the show as a joke now, ever since it moved to Five, and Neighbours is becoming that way too. But when I come on this site I'm happy to see there are still a lot of dedicated UK fans, and, it's still managing to get over 1 million viewers a night, and the first-look on Fiver is often the most watched multi channel program of the day (according to digital spy), so it's not doing too bad, though obviously it's no where near as popular as it was years ago.

My sister always asked why I watched Home and Away and said it was rubbish so I made her watch an episode recently and now she loves it :D I even got her to join bttb

When I first watched the show, I didn't know anybody else who watched it. Now my mum and my sister also watch it. Most of the time, we like and dislike the same characters. :)

He really got into the whole Jack shooting storyline.

So did my dad

He tries to pretend he hates it but wheever something excitings happening he wont mind sitting down and watching

Though he doesn't hate or pretend to hate the show, my dad's the same with regards to sitting down if something exciting's happening. If he's in the room and the show is on, he will usually watch it if there's a car smash or an explosion or if it's relating to Roman. I think that's his favourite character :P. If it's Belle having a chat with Aden in the diner, though, he'll most likely stay in the room but read a magazine or do something else. The funny thing is when I've perhaps seen the episode a billion times before and I'm about to turn it over and he goes 'Oh, keep it on for a sec'.

^Haha yeah. I was in the pub with my family and a friend & I were talking about all the good looking characters and when I said Tony my dad was like ''You fancy Jacks Dad??'' in a shocked tone....then realised what he had said in public and quickly shut up.

I had that once, though not in public. I was like 'Dad, he's a HotDad! I thought you knew I liked him!'

None of my friends watch Home and Away. If anything, they'll watch Neighbours while eating dinner or something. I've been watching Home and Away since... I don't even remember. I'll just say my whole life. My mum got me into the show when I was little and I've been watching it ever since. We have our routine every night. Dinner at 7pm while watching the show together, with my dad making comments in the background. I swear he likes the show a little.

A few of my friends watch the show, though I think I have more who watch Neighbours. But that's cool. I love Neighbours too :D.

I once made a deal with a friend that I would watch Neighbours for a week if she would watch H&A for a week. She'd stopped watching H&A in late 2005 and I wasn't that interested in what was happening in Neighbours at the time. But we lost touch and though we've caught up again, I haven't asked her since whether she watches it. I'd be interested to know if she did keep it up.

Over the years I've got my brother interested in the show, through re-watching old tapes and having the show on all the time :P. Out of my immediate family he's definitely the one who's most interested, followed by my mum and then my dad. Mum loves all the older characters, like Alf, Irene and Colleen. Dad usually says 'Strewth!' when Alf is on-screen, so I definitely take that as a sign that he likes him. And my brother doesn't seem to have a preferance out of the current cast. He seems to like all of them.

But like river4ever, I don't know that many people outside of my family who watch the show. I suppose that's why I joined BTTB. Apart from hearing other people's thoughts, I had to vent somewhere!

My parents used to watch the show avidly, they got me into it. They watched like that until around 2004/2005 when the pace started to change and the show become more plot driven rather than about the characters. Since then, they do catch it every now and then to keep up to scratch on how its going and the writing styles..etc but generally tune in during ''big moments''. However, during 2008, the first half anyway, they watched every day as it felt more like ''traditional'' H&A...until sometimes mid-year and they started loosing interest again.

I reckon people watch but prefer to stay quite about it - when we were in school and Shane died everyone was talking about it and those that ''hated'' the show were chiming in about it too...so that was a give away!

In the UK H&A won TV awards and all sorts back in the mid-90's which was its ''hey day'' for the audience over there, it even won best International Soap at the TV awards in 2000! But I've read lots on forums people getting it wrong about how the ''main'' channel, ITV ditched H&A because it wasn't good enough and it moved to Five (which at the time was a ''lower budget'' channel) - and I've read the same happening with Neighbours which is a real shame - because as we know that is untrue - and Five paid more money than both the BBC and ITV paid!!

Sucess stories

My brothers, both typically saying its crap and I will never like it but then one day he decided to watch Peter's return episode with Drew and got hooked :P

My father loves it and we all know it even he denies it!

I have a story of how I got my family into Home and Away but it is best that I start at the beginning or it is too hard to understand.

A good few years ago now my parents were going through a hard time. They were fighting every night of the week when they thought that I was asleep. I couldn't handle hearing it so I turned the television on in my bedroom and found Home and Away. I began watching it every night because they continued to fight every night. I liked watching other people's drama rather than having to witness my own. My dad was apparently cheating on my mum which was what the fighting was about. Eventually they divorced and my mum was going through a really hard time so I got her to sit down with me one night and we watched Home and Away together. I thought that it would make her forget about it just for half an hour so she can at least have some time in the day where she wasn't crying. I thought it might help her as it helped me during those hard times. She eventually got into the show and then a while later my sisters started watching it for the same reason. It was kind of a security blanket to watch other people's drama (even if it isn't real) rather than thinking about our own.

It might sound a bit corny but it honestly helped us move on. So that's how I got my family into watching Home and Away. And we haven't turned back since.

I agree, though I don't know why you'd prefer to keep quite about it. H&A did have - and to some people still does have - the 'cheesy Aussie soap opera with all the hot guys and girls' connotation but no more than Neighbours IMO and yet everyone here talks about Ramsay Street. Just the other day I was talking to someone and I mentioned my love of Australia and they said 'Ah, one too many episodes of Neighbours, then?' I was like 'Well...in fact...yes...but there is this little show called...errr...Home and Away!!! You know, Alf Stewart, Summer Bay, Sally Fletcher!!!' I didn't really say that but it's what you feel like saying sometimes :D.

I don't think that sounds corny at all. Thanks for sharing, --HomeAndAway-- :).

Watching Tv in general for me is an escape from the real world, home and away's drama is much dramatic then my life so it takes my mind off my problems. Back to the bay is also a escape for me, much better than myspace, facebook....etc.
