Getting people into Home and Away

I just thought I'd share some personal experiences of getting friends and family into Home and Away again, after they hadn't watched it for more than a decade or never had.

My sister knows that I'm obsessed with both Neighbours & Home and Away, and after putting my argument forward for why they were the best shows on tv, she now watches them every day!! I told her that Home and Away rated far higher than Neighbours in Australia (she was already fairly into Neighbours although hadn't watched it for a year due to being in France for her erasmus year for her French degree) and when I told her that people dismissed Home and Away as being a second-rate Neighbours, she watched it again having given up on it around the time of Aaron's arrival, she was hooked again. :P

Another success story from tonight - my ex-flatmate Marle came over for a visit and we were bored. She was asking me if I could name all the current cast of Neighbours and I could which of couse she thought was totally sad. I then showed her my favourite Neighbours clip from 2004, and asked her if she'd ever watched Home and Away. She said no, and didn't even recognise Sally when I played a clip of Sally being stabbed in 08 and then her life/death experience. After that episode, she wanted to watch the next one, and then we went on to watch Sally and Cassie's departures, and she was extremely impressed with the show. She said that she'd never considered watching Home and Away because it was a "carbon copy" of Neighbours which was walways going to be the better soap, but now she knows that Home and Away is much more topical than Neighbours and is a more serious/exciting show on the whole. We then watched Friday's episode and I didn't have anymore, but she wants me to give her Monday's episode when I get it next.

Really funny but I think I've become a Home and Away preacher. I really love this show and think it's so underrated and that people don't give it a chance. I'm really prous when I get people to watch it because I think I've done my job for H&A. I know that's sad. :P

I was wondering if anyone else had had these experiences, in that they'd convinced friends/family the show was great and they now watch regularly!

I recently got my mum back into it, she watched it from the beginning and stopped around early 2004, said she just got fed up with it. She watches Neighbours and I kept saying to her "mum you should start watching H&A again it's way better than Neighbours", but she said she can't because she watches the news at 6 o'clock, but then I said that's not a problem cause you can watch it in the afternoon, and so she decided to give it a chance. Said she'd give it a few weeks and if she didn't get back into it she'd give up. Well anyway, she did get back into it, and she's even started watching it in the evening instead of the news cause she sometimes misses the afternoon showing. She still prefers Neighbours though, but then she always has.

I've also gotten my dad into it, which is surprising cause he isn't really a soap fan. He'd never really watched it properly before but was familiar with some of the long-term characters like Alf and Irene. He really got into the whole Jack shooting storyline.

So yeah, I'm proud to say I have converted both my parents into H&A followers :)

I've had no luck getting my brother back into it though, he's watched a bit of it now and again when my dad's had it on downstairs, but says it's tourcherous. He did used to watch it when he was a kid, from when my mum had it on. Sometimes I tease him about it cause my mum says he used to sing along to the theme song when he was a toddler
