Chapter 14

“Oh, I didn’t realise you’d be here” Belle mumbled as the front door swung open to reveal Kirsty stood on the other side.

“I do live here” Kirsty replied defensively.

“This is my home”

“Actually I think if you check the deeds you’ll find my name on them not yours but I’m willing to let that one go” she told Kirsty before confidently looking her directly in the eye.

“You feel threatened by me I get it, hell I would probably feel the same if I was you. But all I want is to be part of Jamie’s life, you can have the rest of it. The house, Aden, whatever else you want that used to be mine. But you’re a mother I thought you would at least understand why I have to be there for my son. How would you feel if someone tried to stop you being part of Ollie’s life?”

“I didn’t leave Ollie though did I?” Kirsty snapped, the front door still only half open as Belle remained standing on the doorstep.

“Actually you did” Belle replied calmly. She refused to let herself get angry. If Kirsty was going to hate her she wasn’t going to give her anything more to justify it with.

“You left him with Irene, just like I left Jamie with her.”

“He was ill! That wasn’t the same!”

I was ill” she half whispered.

“I did what I thought was best for Ollie Belle, that doesn’t make us the same!”

“You’d be surprised” Belle let out a tiny, breathy laugh.

“Contrary to what everyone around here seems to think I didn’t leave Jamie because I’m a selfish bitch! I left because I couldn’t cope and I knew things would be better for him without me around. I knew Aden would be an amazing father”

“He is an amazing father and you were right things were better for Jamie without you around, so why don’t you just go back to LA and let us get on with our lives?”

“Kirsty!” Aden’s voice cursed from behind the door, his fingers appearing around the edge before he yanked it open, causing Kirsty to wobble unsteadily.

“We talked about this!” he hissed at her.

“Belle being around is the best thing for Jamie, he loves her”

“Until he finds out who she really is and realises that she just left him!” She hissed back at him as though Belle wasn’t even there. The words stung Belle as she realised that Kirsty might be right. Jamie

loved her when she was just Belle but how was he going to feel when he knew she was his mother?

“Look maybe we should just wait a little while longer until we tell him?” she suggested, her voice shaking as the resolve and determination she had built up on the journey over crumbled inside of her.

“No” Aden stated determinedly.

“We’re telling him today. Right now in fact” he ordered pulling her inside the house and heading towards the kitchen. Without a word of objection she followed, her heart almost in her mouth as fear and

uncertainty rushed through her.

“Hey mate, look who’s here to see you” Aden whispered ruffling Jamie’s golden hair as he sat down at the table next to his son.

The four year old briefly glanced in Belle’s direction before returning his attention to finding a bright blue crayon amongst the many scattered all over the table before him.

“Hi Belle” he muttered, barely audibly, before he continued with the drawing he was doing.

“Hey Jamie” she whispered, hesitantly inching forward and sitting down next to him on the opposite side to Aden. They hadn’t even told him yet and he already seemed different. Distant almost and she

didn’t like it.

“What are you drawing?” she questioned looking down at the paper with genuine interest.

“Me and Daddy” he replied without looking up at her as he pointed to the two figures he had drawn to represent himself and Aden.

“Is your Daddy the one with green hair?” she teased.

“That’s the grass silly!” he replied almost annoyed and she looked up at Aden sensing something wasn’t right.

“Jamie” Aden began quietly, his tone sensitive and loving at the same time.

“Belle and I have something to tell you”

“Am I in trouble?” he asked looking from one parent to the other as Belle suddenly realised how intimidating their unexpected intrusion on his colouring session must seem and backed away slightly,

hoping he would no longer feel like they were both hovering over him.

“No of course you’re not”

“I’m a good boy” he whispered, looking at his father with big doleful eyes.

“We know you are” Aden smiled, his hand gently stroking his son’s head as he placed a gentle kiss on the top of it.

“You’re not in trouble mate, we just need to tell you something” he continued as his son went back to colouring.

“Do you remember when you had to draw a picture of your family at nursery?”

Jamie nodded slowly without looking up.

“And everyone else had a Mummy and I didn’t” he whispered as Belle felt her heart shatter into thousands of tiny slivers, as though it was made from glass.

“Well,” Aden took a deep breath as he prepared to reveal who Belle was to his son but before he could Jamie spoke without looking at either of them.

“Is that about Belle being my Mummy?”

Belle and Aden both looked at each other in shock, their mouths gaping as Belle let out a gasp.

“How did you know that Jamie?” Aden asked quietly.

He shrugged, his gaze still on his picture as he coloured in Aden’s baby blue eyes.

“It’s like Aunt Nicole says, I have big ears”

Aden couldn’t help but let out a small laugh, his lips curling into a tiny smile.

“They don’t look very big to me” Belle dared to tease, reaching out to pretend to measure his ear.

He instantly recoiled at her touch, scuttling his small frame across his chair, closer to Aden.

“Jamie, how long have you known about this?” Aden whispered.

“Just since last night Daddy, I wasn’t earsdropping I promise” he told Aden with a worried look that made him want to scoop his son into his arms. He didn’t even bother to correct him like he usually

would.

“I just needed the bathroom and you and Belle were loud”

“It’s okay mate” Aden reassured him, looping an arm protectively around his tiny frame.

Jamie suddenly looked up at Belle though long eyelashes which were almost an exact replica of his father’s.

“You said you were just Belle” he told her sternly.

“You lied. Telling lies is naughty.”

“Jamie, Belle didn’t lie. She just didn’t tell you” Aden tried to appease the situation.

“Why not?” he asked her accusingly as he moved closer to Aden.

“Because I didn’t know if you would want me to be your Mummy” she whispered, her voice breaking slightly, before she bit her lip, hard, in an attempt to stop the tears threatening to escape.

She had anticipated that this would be difficult but as he looked up at her, pained and confused, it was harder than she had ever imagined.

“Why not?” he asked again.

“Because I went away for a long time and you have Kirsty now” she told him struggling to get the words out.

“But Kirsty’s not my mummy” he told her simply before gazing at her intently.

“Are you better now?”

“Better?”

“Daddy said my Mummy was sick and she went away to get better. Are you better now?” he questioned as he cradled the pale blue crayon he was still clutching, close to his chest.

“All better. Especially now I’m here with you” she smiled before glancing up at Aden and staring him straight in the eye for the briefest of moments.

“And Daddy”

“Are you going to get sick again?” He asked dubiously, his eyes flickering over her face as though he was trying to decide whether she looked healthy or not.

“I hope not”

“Are you going to go away again?”

“No” she replied without hesitation, smiling down at him.

“Not when I’ve got someone as important and special as you to stay here for”

“I was here before and you didn’t stay then” he replied simply.

“I know” she sighed.

“But I’m not going to leave again, I promise. You’re my little boy and I love you...lots and lots”

For the briefest of moments she thought she saw the end of his lips begin to curve into a smile but his face was solemn again before she could tell whether she had imagined it or not.

“I’m not little, I’m a big boy” he insisted.

“I’m almost 5!”

“I know, I was there when you were born” she smiled.

“Did I really come out of your tummy?” he questioned, looking at her flat stomach rather suspiciously.

“Yes, yes you did”

“And Daddy put me in there?”

Belle hesitated with a giggle, unsure of what exactly Aden had told Jamie about the birds and the bees.

“It was sort of a team effort” she finally answered with a smile as Aden smirked and she knew exactly which memory was going through his mind right then.

“Did you and Daddy used to kiss?” Jamie asked, a look of horror and disgust flashing across his face as he did so.

“A very long time ago!” Aden suddenly interjected, his words cutting into Belle as he spoke.

“Are you sure I fit in there?” Jamie changed the subject back as he reached his little hand out and placed it on Belle’s tummy gently.

“You were a lot smaller then” she smiled at his bewildered face.

“And Belle was a lot bigger!” Aden laughed.

“Like Aunt Nicole was when Sophie was in her tummy?”

“Exactly”

“She was really fat!” he exclaimed honestly with a giggle.

“Mummies have to be fat for a while so that their babies can grow safely inside them”

“How did I get out of there?” he questioned and she lifted her top slightly, exposing her scar, thankful for the fact she had a c-section and she didn’t have to explain about him coming out of a different

part of her all together.

“The doctors cut into my tummy to get you out”

“Wow!” he whispered as he traced his fingertips lightly over her faded scar.

“Did you have another baby?” he asked as he noticed her other scar not far from the one he was touching.

She nodded slowly a tear suddenly rolling down her cheek.

“Before you. But they went to heaven before I got to meet them”

“I’m sure Nanny Irene is looking after your other baby” he told her as he pulled his hand away.

“Yes, I’m sure she is” she smiled at the image, at how simple he found everything.

“Didn’t you love me?” he suddenly blurted out.

“What?”

“You said you wouldn’t go away again because you love me but you went away before. Didn’ t you love me then?” he asked, edging closer to Aden once more before whispering.

“Daddy never went away”.

“Of course I loved you” she tried to reassure him as his words cut through her like a dagger to the heart.

“I have always loved you, I was just sick sweetie and I needed to go away and get better. But I never stopped loving you and I missed you every single day”

“Every day?” he whispered, his eyes wide and expectant.

“Every day” she nodded with a weak smile.

“Don’t they have telephones in ‘Merica?” he asked accusingly and she knew exactly what he meant.

“They do but I missed you so much Jamie that I was worried that if I could talk to you but not see you it would make me feel worse than I already did”

“I missed having a Mummy”

“And I’m so sorry Jamie. I’m sorry it took me so long to get better and come back to you but you were always with me” she told him quietly as she looped a finger between her wrist and the cold metal

of her charm bracelet. She lifted the silver charm which hung next to the star and showed it to him.

“Daddy gave this to me after you were born and I never take it off”

“J for Jamie?” he asked with a tiny smile.

“J for Jamie” she nodded, her smile mirroring his.

“Even when I wasn’t with you, you were always in here” she told him patting her hand over her heart.

“Do I have to call you Mummy now?”

“You can call me whatever you like”

He suddenly went back to his colouring and continued with his picture for a few minutes before looking up at her.

“I think I’ll call you Belle”

“That’s ok” she nodded, a sharp pain shooting through her. She understood but that didn’t mean it hurt her any less.

“Do you have a Mummy Belle?”

“Yes, yes I do”

“So I have a Grandma? I’ve never had a Grandma before” he smiled sweetly.

“I really don’t think she’d be very happy with you calling her that though!” Belle chuckled at the thought of how horrified Amanda would be.

“Why?”

“Because it would make her feel old”

“But if she’s my Grandma she must be old! Grandma’s are old!”

“She’s not as old as other Grandma’s. But even if she was she still likes to pretend she’s young” Belle laughed.

“Will I get to meet her?”

“I’m sure you will one day”

“Then what will I call her?”

“Grandma” Belle laughed cruelly unable to resist, knowing that Amanda would be mortified and it would make for excellent entertainment.

“Do you have a Daddy?” he asked putting down the red crayon he had been using and snuggling closer to Aden.

“Somewhere” she whispered.

“But I’ve never met him”

“Did he go away too?”

“Not really” she shook her head.

“I don’t think he ever knew he was my Daddy”

“That’s sad” he told her matter of factly.

“I love my Daddy”

“And he loves you” Aden told him, dropping his head to place a kiss against his son’s forehead. A huge smile lit up Jamie’s face and Belle’s, already broken, heart lurched as she realised he would never

feel the same way about her as he did about Aden.

“You’re never going away are you Daddy?” he searched for reassurance, crushing Belle slighty.

“Never ever” Aden promised.

“Even if you get sick?”

“Not even then” Aden assured his son as he wrapped his little arms tightly around his waist and held onto him as if his life depended upon it.

“Jamie” Kirsty suddenly appeared at the door, “It’s bedtime”

“Ok” he replied without any protest, jumping out of Aden’s lap and heading towards the door.

“I could read you a story?” Belle offered and he turned back to look at her. His baby blue eyes wandered over her face as he pondered.

“I want Daddy to” he announced, crushing her once more.

“I’ll be up in 5 minutes” Aden told him as he smiled and ran after Kirsty.

“Jamie!” Aden called him back.

“Aren’t you going to say goodnight to Belle?”

“Night Belle” he told her quickly, barely looking at her before he left the room.

Belle buried her head in her hands as tears began to stream down her face. She heard Aden shift as he shuffled onto the chair their son had previously occupied. His hand wandered around her shoulders and he pulled her closer to him, her head tucked under his chin as he rubbed her arm soothingly.

“He doesn’t trust me” she sniffled, looking up at him.

“Just give him time, he’s just a little confused right now”

“I can never change what I did, I can’t suddenly make it better Aden”

“He’ll come round”

“You don’t know that”

“Oh I think I do” he told her with a small smile creeping across his lips as he pushed the picture Jamie had left on the table in front of her.

She looked down to see two blond haired stick figures, holding hands, labelled “Daddy” and “Me” with a dark haired figure labelled “Belle” standing a short distance away.

WOW! That was seriously so... WOW!

I loved Kirsty and Belle's bitchiness at the start! Jamie's reactions were perfect! It was sad but then the picture just showed some hope, i love what you represented through that, it was great!!!

Can't wait for another update!!! :D

Thanks guys :) I'm glad you liked it, I was worried how it was going to be received given that Jamie didn't just automatically accept Belle. I didn't think that would be realistic at all but it seems to be the way it goes in a lot of other fics so I was worried about daring to be different!

Yeah I liked that he's not embracing her straight away as his mum it's going to take time for her to regain his trust!! Very realistic I liked it!! But I love all the fic hehe!
