Character Illness

Today in our society more and more people suffer with Diabetes. I think that H & A should look at making one of the characters a diabetic. Instead of repeating the same old cancer storyline. If this was possible which character would you pick?

Topic moved.

Ric did have diabetes but I'd have liked to have seen it bought up a little more often.

You're right about it being something a lot of older characters get. I'd like to see Colleen develop it personally, I think there could be sme real comedic moments with her tackling it as well as covering the serious aspects such as it being a big lifestyle change.

I think it would be good. Not only Diabetes but also epilepsy and Asmtha. Also Jack had a liver transplant when Zoe blew up the wedding reception so how come he never takes anti rejection tablets? Also Kirsty had a kidney transplant.

Also gestastional diabeties in pregnancy. I don't think that has ever been covered before. It seems that no one in Summer bay ever gets a cold or the flu.

You're right about the gestational diabetes. Our daughter in law is a type 1 diabetic and we were introduced to all the extra complications and worries that were involved in her having our lovely granddaughter. It would actually make quite a good storyline.

I personally think that Amy Matthews would be more than capable in doing a storyline like this while her character Rachel is pregnant. It's a storyline that needs to be given to someone who does not usually get a lot of screentime, and as Rachel is pregnant for the first time (well that is longer than 4 weeks)she would be ideal.

I had also discussed a long time ago (in the spoiler thread) the possibility of Rachel having pre-eclampsia at the end of her pregnancy.

They mentionned Ric had diabetes a while after he arrived on the show. But then it's like they forgot about it or something. <_<

I also think they should find some other diseases to talk about. I know cancer, bulimia and anorexia are serious illnesses and a lot of people are suffering for it. I'm sure everyone on this board knows someone who suffered/is suffering from cancer, whether it's somebody they're close to or just an acquaintance. But it would be nice to introduce some other diseases too, whether it's a disease like asthma which a lot of people have or one which is very rare.

I like how they wrote Cassie's HIV storyline. It was very emotional and Sharni's acting was great. Unfortunately, she left the show. It would have been interesting to see how Cassie was handling it, how it could have an impact on her everyday life, the complications it could have brought up while she was giving birth etc.

A character suffering from amnesia could be interesting too. I don't remember if they already had such a storyline. We could see how that character struggles to find his/her memory back, etc.

I think the last time Ric's diabetes was mentioned was when he was seeing Belle and Dom poured acid over his legs and the doctor said that his diabetes might increase the risk of infection or something similar.(So that would be 2006, I guess.About two years before he left the show...)

Jade had asthma when she first appeared but it quickly got forgotten about.Amnesia(assuming I haven't got it)...Pippa had a touch when she came out of her coma but that didn't last long...Have to think about that one.Oh, Hayley lost about a year of memories after that car crash.Still thinking...
