Eli Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Does anyone else find all the storylines involving The Coastal News REALLY annoying? I think that one "newspaper" can ruin entire episodes by making everything seem completely unrealistic. I don't want to sound like a newspaper geek, and I'm not gonna pretend I know a lot about Australian newspapers or anything, but seriously, you have GOT to be kidding me! Over the past few years we've had numerous cases of front page headlines based on lies, huuuge things where someone has ended up as being accused of being a liar etc. because they've only used one source, big made-up headlines based on random pictures and no facts whatsoever, journalists sleeping with the people they're interviewing and several leaks of confidental information. I'm not saying newspapers are always innocent and that all journalists have their ethic guidelines in mind when they write a story, but I work for a Norwegian newspaper, and unless Australia is completely different from Norway (which I doubt, the guidelines are pretty global) that newspaper would have been sued and shut down and forced to apologise to all their victims. IMO the newspaper storylines aren't even good storylines, no matter how dramatic they are. It doesn't help that they're more dramatic than most murder storylines in the bay, when they're so unrealistic I want to cry. Anyone else thinking the same, or am I just a newspaper-g33k?
valli Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Well, if you're a newspaper-g33k, then you're not alone I totally agree with you. Articles like the ones in The Coastal News would never have been accepted in Norway, so I don't see why it should be accepted in Australia. Most of them appear only to be rumours and not been confirmed by anyone other than the journalist himself/herself I mean, that's worse than Se og Hør here in Norway. And they are pretty bad. They have been sued several times and they mostly only write gossip. So why aren't The Coastal News being sued? If Home and Away was really realistic, many of the citizens of Summer Bay would have sued them a long time ago. So I find those storylines annoying and unrealistic, so I'm totally with you, Eli

I mean, The Coastal News make the juice-hungry tabloids seem like nice, friendly, source critical local newspapers! Australian media has always seemed to be way more concored and conservative than Norwegian media to me, so like I said I doubt that newspaper could ever have made it a week without being reported and REALLY dealt with. I know it wouldn't have over here, believe me!
Cerise Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Anyone else thinking the same, or am I just a newspaper-g33k? You and me both I agree with valli. I think the Costal News is used more to create storylines, but in exchange it takes away from the realism.
