Summer Bay Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Correct me if im wrong , I remembered today Hearing something a few years back about Ric having diabetes. It was around the 2005 opener when Robbie did the nudie run and stept on a syringe. He later had a go at Ric for being a junkie and leaving he's dirty syringes everywhere and Ric said he is not a junkie and he is actually a diabetic. Does anyone remember this?? Have we heard Ric talking about it more recently? If he does have Diabetes and i am not just some crazy kid making things up , i would really like to see the writers use it more often , even if it is just in general conversation. It would certainly add realism (if thats a word ) to the show.
Formerly Known as FKAJ Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 I remember it, and the first time it was mentioned was when Alf caught him injecting himself and chased him out of the flat before looking at the syringe and realising that it was just insulin. However, it hasn't been mentioned since early-mid 2006 about two episodes after Dom pours battery acid on his legs, and a doctor tells him that because of his diabetes he should have got help sooner. It has not come up since then.
Eli Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 You're definitely right. Robbie thought he had HIV after accidentally stepping on the needle or a syringe Ric had dropped in the woods when he ran away from the hospital in late 2004. Then later Alf thought Ric was using illegal drugs when he saw him inject himself in early 2005, right after Ric came back and was welcomed to live with Alf. When Robbie found out he wasn't HIV positive and figured out that it probably was Ric's needle he reacted with anger towards Ric because he felt that Ric had put him through worrying and pushing everyone away while worrying about being positive when he shouldn't have had to worry in the first place at all as it was just a needle Ric had used for his insulin injection, and obviously he wasn't positive. I haven't seen the battery acid episodes yet (they air here in a few weeks I think) but I'm "glad" they mention it. This seems like something they have kind of forgotten, cause IMO they could easily have used Ric's diabetes as a 'prop' to create more twists or realistic turns of storylines.
tmg Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I don't think that it is mentioned enough, Jade and her asthma was mentioned more often.
emmasi Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Which is ironic because Mark Furze actually has asthma. Actually I'm not sure how that's ironic. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

I think the battery acid episodes is the only time they ever mention it again. To be realistic it should be mentioned more often I think. For example Ric seems to be able to eat and drink anything and when you have diabetes there are a lot of things you should be careful with. And you never see him inject himself either except for in the very beginning.

Oh my god does Mark Furze have asthma I never knew that. Do you reckon they continue in 2008 about Ric being diabetic?
NickyDj3000 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 That's bizzare. If he needs insulin he'd also need to be taking his blood sugar levels at least daily [most diabetics that don't even need insulin have to do this] and we've never seen that once. He's always into the salty, fatty sugary food too, which is a total no-no. :S

I don't think they will make anything out of it when they haven't done it so far. I wish they would, to make it more realistic, but I doubt it will happen :/
loveangelmusicbaby Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Yes I vaguely remember this too. It is funny it hasn't been mentioned since. Not like you can grow out of it or anything. It will probably come up later on when it is most needed like a health crisis or something...
