Is Martha given too much air time?

My children, together with my nieces and nephews and some of their friends who were over for a BBQ were all talking about Martha the other day and the consensus of opinion was that Martha is given too much air time. They felt that every story line seems to end up being about Martha, and I sort of agree. She never seems to have a down time like the other characters. If Jodi were as good an actor as Kate Ritchie, Ada Nicademou , Lynne McGranger, or Jessica Tovey I think they, and I, would understand it more. They all like Jodi, but think that Martha is over used at the expense of other characters. Do other people agree with this?

Yeah I do. I think they should half her time, and give that other half to Leah, considering she's ridiculously underused, whereas Martha's the opposite.

The cynic in me says that as her boyfriends Dad is the owner of Channel Seven this is inevitable. They probably think they have to make it all about her. I hope Bevan does not make it all about her when he takes over. Otherwise they should just rename it The Martha Show and be done with it.

I was horrified when they made the Corey poisoning story about her. For weeks we saw Corey poisoning Irene, she fell apart slowly week by week, and was scheduled into a psychiatric unit by her family and friends. Martha has a few dates with him, and he chases her through the bushes for 10 minutes and wow its all about her. Poor Irene's trauma is forgotten. Lynne gives an amazing performance of a woman losing her mind but Martha gets the promo and the TV Week Cover! That was insulting. She also seems to be at the hospital when ever any one is admitted, and seems to have a finger in the pie of every major story line. Jodi, lovely though she is, is at best an average actress so it does not make sense to me. However, the cynic in me again thinks that when Kate leaves Jodi will be lined up to be doing DWTS or ITT so they can plug and hype her for a gold logie. It would be so nice if someone else, someone who deserves it like Irene, Leah or Morag got the limelight for a change. They deserve it far more.

That has nothing to do with anything.

Jodi has only been dating him for several months or so, and I doubt it'd be a case of favourtism. That would be pretty shallow if it was.

If she has only been dating him for a couple of months, it wouldn't really match up with the 2 months between shooting and airing, would it? I didn't even know she was dating, so I don't know how serious it is between them and for how long they've been going out.

I think she is given too much air time.. At first I didnt like Martha, then I grew to kind of liking her and now I am just over her. I feel that we just see way to much especially in the last couple of weeks

You know what you are completely right! I LOVE Leah and I feel that lately her storylines have not been the best. She is a fantastic actress and I think she is someone I would love to see a lot more of again. I know this is a thread about Martha but just wanted to add .... that I loved the days when Leah did have more airtime and they did something interesting with her charracter rather than have her just working in the diner.

Martha definitely got too much air time. It's Martha that and Martha this.

I agree that Leah, Irene and Morag should get more. They are being ignored!

Why can't Martha be in the background for once? I'm getting tired of her.

I will always be a fan of Jodi Gordon, but I'm about to change my mind about Martha. I thought she was cool when she came to the bay, but now she's just annoying. Bad choices and bad boys. *Sighs* When will the writers learn not to overdo things?

I don't think it has anything to do with who her boyfriend is, I think it's more a case of her being ridiculously attractive. It's always been the case that the current 'golden girl' and 'golden boy' (usually an on-screen couple) get the most airtime, because the show's primarily young audience will fancy the pants off them and it will bring in more viewers. It happened with Shane and Angel, Noah and Hayley, Tammin Sursok, Isabel Lucas, Chris Hemsworth etc etc. They also know that if they put Jodi on the front cover of magazines, they'll sell more copies and therefore get more promotion for the show. Personally I'm not a fan of Martha - yes, Jodi's a beautiful girl, but Martha is an extremely annoying, selfish character. I'd much rather see more of Leah.

Of course, another reason for her over-use could be that Jodi needs more acting practise than the others...
