Give Irene a decent storyline!

I would be happier if they began the process by having Irene interact with the young people living in her household, that is Annie, Geoff and Belle, in a more realistic fashion that at present. This needs to be done in the way that she used to do with the Smith's and with Selina, Chloe, and Joey. Irene is their carer and yet she may as well be their landlady for all they seem to see of her. Once they have that established they will also have the basis to give her some decent story lines for herself again. I really miss seeing Irene in the thick of the action. I'd like to know why they have side lined her because the fans certainly do not want this. They have rocks in their head if they think we do.

I agree 100%

After this weeks episodes I am left feeling that the current writers do not get Irene at all, as has been suggested by previous posters. The Irene of old would not be as critical of Aden and in fact would be more likely to be one of his main supporters, even if he was giving her grief. I feel as if she is being used in stereotypical way at present for the sake of the story lines and that they have not done their homework in relation to what the character would really do.

I completely agree 100% - Get things back on track in this way and you are half way home.

Again I agree , its obvious that the basics referred to above are missing or this would not be happening. It's frustrating for long term viewers, and for newer ones who are trying to make sense of the character.

I guess She is being critical of Aden more so because she is protecting Belle. That and he quit on her.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with Irene not supporting Aden, he's caused Belle nothing but heartache and she's got every reason to dislike him. She's always been somewhat hard line with people who hurt her kids(Amanda, Josie, Diane...even Steven took a long time to win her over).I'm more concerned about her picking on Jai.

She was fine with Jai once Annie told her the truth about what happened on the roof. It was Geoff who was being the idiot. As soon as Annie fessed up she left Annie at Jai's bedside when he was in hospital because she understood what was happening. The thing with Aden is she now knows what has happened to him and has some understanding and knows why Belle has been supporting him and why Rachel has too. Irene of old would have stood back and reviewed her position the minute she knew about the abuse, and would have been fighting Aden's corner, she would have still given him some stick, but in a different way, she does not do pity. That's whats missing in the writing today, that bit of humanity and compassion which was always there and which was evident in everything she did and in all her relationships with the other characters, especially they kids with the broken wings. Its there sometimes but its not consistent.

Hmm.I'd love to see an example of Irene thinking someone being abused gives them the right to take one of her kids hostage. She thought the worst of Michael for a long time after his background became public. And when Noah, someone else with a rubbish childhood, had a drink problem, she advised Hayley to stay away from him and took a very harsh line with him.Trust has always had to be earned with Irene and I don't think Aden's done anything to make her trust him.

I have a sneaky feeling that the second story line for Irene this year is going to be Kane and Kirsty related so it isn't going to be her story and its all going to be over in a a couple of weeks like the last one. Blink and we'll miss it.

I think that you may be correct, which will be rather disappointing for Irene fans. We can hope however that next year sees her playing a more central and realistic role and one which reflects both Lynne's talents and Irene's importance to the show.
