Is Alex not coming back then?? He left pretty suddenly..i assumed the storyline was unfinished and that we'd see him again soon..seems pretty pointless to only bring him back for such a short period of time, and leave with leah hating him.

Nope. At least not in the foreseeable future that is.

Making Alex a permanent character again is a long shot. If we do see him again I believe it will just be a guest stint. Also because the actor does a lot of work now behind the camera with directing and what not, I think I heard him say on one of the videos on the official site he wants to be a director and that the behind the camera is his main focus.

I have never been a fan of Alex, so glad he didn't stick around. It seemed pointless but I suppose it gave something for Leah to do, and maybe the chance for her to have a storyline again in the future if Alex popped back again.

I think they probably left it like that so they'd have a credible reason to bring him back again. Leah is a very family-oriented person and I don't think she'd be able to cut her brother out of her life permanently, so if Danny wants to come back it would be nice to see a reformed Alex return to make amends.
