RTE(Ireland) not happy with interfering Channel 5(UK)

Where they can control it, yes. For example, we receive RTE channels on the Sky entertainment package, and certain programmes are blocked out, due to rights issues. This includes H&A (at Five's request) and some sports. However they cannot block out programs on analogue signal, which is what I was referring to when I was talking about viewer choice. I apologise, I should have been more clear.

Thanks. So there might be people in N.Ireland who cant get H&A at all because they cant recieve Five and because Five are blocking the RTE signal?

Narrowing the arguement down in the most childlike manner......................Five had a new toy to play with, it spent a lot of money on it but RTE got to play with it first, despite spending practically nothing. Wouldn't you be a tad peeved? :P

Agh. I don't care if C5 get it first. :P It's the fact that they tell us to stay a few episodes behind "or else..." which annoys me. Yes, they should have it first because they contribute large amounts of money, but why can't we air it when we want instead of being threatened? We aren't going to pass them out... so we'd just like a full-week of H&A and not a few episodes....then off-air for a few days....then back on again.

Just for the record, I don't care how far behind we are. I'd just want them to stop threatening us every time we catch up even by ONE episode. I believe C5 took RTE to court over it... which in my opinion was totally unnecessary.

Yes, there was a long court battle over it. Home and Away was off air for quite a few months over it.

That was sorted out in 1916.

I'll ignore this sweeping statement and move back on topic...

Just something that occurred to me while reading through everyone's posts: while I agree that it's sad that we're no longer just slightly behind Australia like we once were (I've refrained from using the word 'unfair' because Five have paid a considerable amount of money), part of the reason why Five are getting annoyed (despite several forum members insistence that UK/Ireland Five/RTE are 2 difference countries/channels) is because in Northern Ireland, the vast majority of viewers with a decent enough TV reception can receive BOTH Five and RTE. This gives the viewer choice, the viewer can choose to view H&A on Five or RTE. Now, completely ignoring any pro-Nationalist opinions, the simple political fact is that Northern Ireland is part of the UK and Five have bought the rights to screen H&A in the UK. This right is violated firstly by viewers receiving RTE (unavoidable), so naturally Five are going to protect their assets, but they have to learn to deal with this violation. So imagine then if RTE is screening episodes ahead of Five. Obviously the viewer will choose to watch H&A on RTE. This is completely unfair on Five and therefore, despite my grievances, I believe Five are right to protect their asset.

I understand what you are saying about the NI audience tuning into RTE if they were ahead of five showings and that was the case because i used to watch it on RTE years ago!

Coming back to five protecting their assets and screening it in the UK and NI part of the UK, I agree with you, but I really dont see the point in blocking the signal on HAA screening on RTE in NI in which they do - considering we have already seen the episode on five, whats the point stopping transmission?

Another thing is the NI population is pretty small anyway - I dont think they would have any effect on fives ratings if everyone was to watch RTE - I really dont think they have to protect their assets here cause of the ratings would have little impact if everyone was to tune out.

Ok Guys,

I sent an email to the Director of Programming at RTE today to find out why Home and Away was off the air on Monday 7/1/08 and again on 14/1/08. I also asked why the lack of advertising/promos for Home and Away (and Neighbours) on RTE, the RTE Guide and RTE website.

Here is the reply I got from RTE:

I do take several of your points on board.

The pre-emption of the Home and Away episodes this week and next week are due to the fact that Channel 5 dropped episodes over the Christmas period and only informed us after the RTE Guide Christmas issue had gone to press. Channel 5’s license fee for the show is absolutely enormous, so much so, that it costs the 7 Network absolutely nothing to commission the show. They do have a European premiere of the show and we have to either simulcast or follow after them.

As we are very happy with our 6.30pm slot we wouldn’t want to simulcast and move the show to 6.00 PM. Even though you say viewers may switch to Channel 5, it is still not widely available in Ireland. Indeed less than 5% of the population can see it, as it is not on cable (NTL or Chorus), nor on Sky’s EPG, and can’t be viewed via an ariel except in border areas.

We do intend to promote Neighbours when it leaves the BBC. Again Channel 5 have a European premiere, and again we can simulcast, but now await their confirmed start time.

Kind Regards,

'can't receive Five' and 'Five are blocking the RTE signal' are somewhat unrelated: when we say you can't receive Five we're talking about analogue terrestrial, i.e. regular TV signal. But blocking the signal is only on Sky (not sure about cable), so if you are in NI and you have Sky you have both Five and RTE so if RTE's H&A is blocked out you could watch it on Five.

With regards to the other forum member who said what's the point in blocking out the signal, this was relevant when RTE were showing episodes ahead of Five. To be honest I'm not sure whether the signal is still being blocked out now that RTE is level with/behind Five.

What about promoting Home and Away though? What e mail address did you write to? I think we need to launch attack on RTE!!

Also, five need to do more as well, the figures for HAA when in was aired on ITV were almost 10million, now just 1 or 2 million - you would think five would advertise and promote it more considering the amount they are paying for it! Maybe they could advertise on other channels, like channel four did with hollyoaks - to reach a bigger audience than on their own channel.

Five promotes H&A much more than any other channel promotes their soaps, but I suppose the H&A adverts are never as repetative as the adverts they show for that awful 'cooking the books' (you know the one with the paper food and M&S music?) They've shown that a million times!!!

Five repeats its promotion videos so it may be more promotion than other soaps but I would prefer to watch different promotions now and again like Eastenders rather than having to watch the same thing over and over again.

If five had sevens promos at the end of the eps it think would be great! Can they not buy them or something???

I emailed Five about this some time ago. And there answer was No ... cannot remember the reason but they said they were unable to.

Its just unlucky that they cant get them, cause i think it would help promote the show and anyway sevens promos are always way better than any of the promos that five had done!
