Dear oh dear, fragile post-colonial relations between the U.K. and Ireland brought to the boil on the BTTB forum! I'm Irish and while I would hate to think of RTE being forced to stay behind Five, I still think Five are entitled to have the rights to the first showing of Home and Away if they are paying for such a significant part of the production costs. In fact I feel most sorry for Australian viewers having to know that their homegrown show if partly financed by a foreign network. Both Five and RTE have been catching up a lot lately, I think RTE only stopped airing Home and Away for a week at Christmas, while Aussie viewers are subjected to an agonisingly long and ever-increasing summer break. I rarely catch the show on tv anymore, I mostly see it on YouTube so I'm not too fussed about the RTE episodes, however I think RTE should put up more of a fight and be proud to show such a great programme. They should promote it more to draw in viewers from a demographic who perhaps don't normally watch the show, like putting promos on during later evening programmes. And another thing which severly pisses me off is this: in the RTE Guide (the Irish version of TV Week, for non-Irish people reading this), the soap preview section NEVER features Home and Away prominently, yet it always has big stories about Emmerdale and Coronation Street which aren't even shown on RTE!!! RTE needs to take pride in its "jewel" show and treat it with the respect it deserves. Why not hire actors from the show to film promos for Home and Away? They've done that with a lot the big U.S. shows, C.S.I. being the biggest you can possibly get, and Jorja Fox recently featured in promos for her show. I also remember Neve Campbell doing a promo on RTE for Party Of Five during the 90's. It'd be great to see Kate Ritchie telling Irish viewers to watch Home and Away on RTE, and would make Irish viewers feel that their viewership is valued.

Yep, so now RTE will be showing the same daily episode as Five from Tuesday 15th January. But RTE will still have the upper hand over Five, as the 1.25pm broadcast on RTE1 will be the first screening followed by the repeat at 6.30pm on RTE2. Five show their first screening at 6pm with the repeat the following morning.

So we (RTE) still come out good!

Five edit the show anyways....RTE never cut it...beyond me why anyone in Ireland would watch it on Five. Support our own ratings rather than Five's...!! :P

I hear what you are saying DinerLandlord....I agree fully!

RTE need to advertise the show alot more! I contacted RTE hence my reason for starting this thread! You should contact RTE with your ideas....they are very accommodating and listened to what the concerns I had. They promised me that they would catch up with Five after being 2 episodes behind, and they have now done this by catching up over the Xmas break! So we will now be on the same episode as Five come Tues 15th Jan!

I have the details of the best person you could contact in RTE with your ideas....I think they would be interested! Never know unless you try i guess!

I would watch it on RTÉ2 if they had promos. I stopped watching it here in May '07, and I began to watch the Aus episodes instead.

I remember they had mini-promos during.... Summer'06(?). It was a promo for Fair City, then it went to a scene in H&A, then EastEnders or something. And there was a voice over like "Only on RTÉ" or some crap like that. Having promos would increase the ratings dramatically. People in school always say they don't watch it because they aren't "interested". Wave a promo in their face and they might change their mind. :P I don't think it will cost much to make them. The people in RTÉ are pretty good with promos, even the Fair City ones can be OK.

I agree with you. Home and Away rates higher than any of those shows listed above yet RTE do nothing to promote it. H&A has consistently been top of their ratings for the past twenty years yet they never promote it. Imagine how many more people would watch it, if stories such as Sally's stabbing or Sally's wedding were heavily promoted here.

Does advertising for a soap increase the ratings though. I mean, most people out there will know what a particular soap is aobut and whether they like it or not. I mean, if you watch TV, you either know whether or not you like Eastenders. Putting a promo on isn't going to make those who thought the show was crap before suddenly start watching.

The promos have certainly helped Home and Away in Australia this year. Look at key episodes such as the season opener, Sally's wedding and Pippa getting knocked down. All were heavily promoted and all rated higher than normal. The promos for the exciting stories attract the occasional viewer, and if someone watched years ago but didnt really bother with it now, they still might tune in if they thought sonething was going to happen to Sally.

The point is, Home and Away is one of RTE's most successful shows. They, themselves have admitted that its the jewel in the network's crown. So, why do they treat it like a piece of sh**? If you go onto RTE's website you will find info on all their shows, except Home and Away. That just doesn't make sense.
