RTE(Ireland) not happy with interfering Channel 5(UK)

Someone in RTE finally admitted to H&A beingh a jewel in the network's crown yet they still continue to treat it like s***!! No promos, no advertisement whatsoever yet it has consistently won it's timeslot for the past 19 years. Imagine the ratings if they actually promoted it. Especially a story like Sally's stabbing. And if they are allowed to show the episodes on the same day, why arent they? Some of the blame also lies with Seven. RTE was loyal to them for so long and then they allowed another network to just come in and take over. Surely RTE must also be paying a huge amount for the show if they held the rights for the first 12 years.

I think all Irish fans should email RTE and put the pressure on! Make them catch up with those 2 episodes they are lagging behind Channel 5. The more we hassle them, they will note that how many people are really annoyed about Channel 5 over-taking!! After all we don't want RTE's ratings to fall and then them dropping it as a result. Come on guys, lets take a stand on this!!!!

Here is the person to contact - Dermot.Horan@rte.ie (be sure to post the response you get from RTE)

2 episodes....is that really worth complaining so much over?

As Five do cover more than half of the shows production cost, then I do believe that they should have the right for the first European showing of the episodes - and why shouldn't they? As someone at Seven once told me, the Seven/Five relationship is a partnership with a mutual respect, one which will last for the lifetime of the show.

Even if RTE did overtake Five, they wouldn't hold the grand title of 'First Broadcaster outside of Australia to show the episodes', as that would be TV3 in New Zealand who show them approximately 6 weeks after Oz.

I cannot see the argument that the ratings could fall and RTE drop it as a result, even RTE said themselves that they continue to rise and it currently beats other programmes in the timeslot.

As for other points, any edits that Five make are made in order to maintain regulations set in place by OFCOM, something which they regret but have to stick to, so they cannot be blamed for that.

What, really, is the big deal here? RTE being "held to ransom" would be Five preventing them from showing the show at all, or enforcing a larger gap between the episodes. Describing a two episode gap with such and force is really, quite pathetic. Although it may seem like some huge deal, there are some pretty big things going on in the world and for this to provoke such an outcry really make me wonder sometimes where people's priorities lie.

And as for five being "interfering".....they contribute huge amounts of money to the show, yet contribute nothing in terms of content, style, hirings and firings etc. I wouldn't call ensuring a show stays on air without questionning what it's actually about, interfering.

I'm sure if it was the other way-round, your views would be different. You might think it's a stupid thing to complain over, but if it was Channel 5 that got the rights taken off them by RTÉ, you'd be spitting teeth. Right?

Well, two days behind the UK's not necessarily the problem, Ireland's 10 weeks behind where it could be. However, hopefully, when the UK catches up, both the UK and Ireland will get the show pretty soon after the Aussie's see it.

By the way, for the first few months(?) in 2000, Ireland got the World Premiere.

Actually no. Very rarely do I catch the show on five, and even if it did lag behind, I'm sure I wouldn't be too heartbroken. I mean, just think.....the show could be be taen off air completely - a bit of a lag really wouldn't cause me any issues.

It's nothing to do with the "two episode gap" between Ireland and the UK. The "big deal" as explained in the first post is that Ireland could (and has been in the past) showing episodes only a day behind Australia. But now it can't because it is forced to stay behind Channel 5 which is several months behind Australia.

Although it may seem like some huge deal, there are some pretty big things going on in the world and for this to provoke such an outcry really make me wonder sometimes where people's priorities lie.

This arguement could be applied to just about any opinion on any messageboard on the internet. SO you have either you've just made an earth shattering realisation, or a completely pointless one.

What I'm saying is, why is it a big deal? "Several" months = 2 and half months which I think is pretty fair dinkum for an international show. Most American shows for example are shown six to twelve months ahead of their US premiere. What astounds me is that people are making such a big deal about having to wait two more days to see an episode than another country. Fair enough, five's tactics probably aren't "the norm" but at the same time, they pay at least half the production costs, whereas RTE pay absolutely nothing towards the actual production of the show. And as I said in my previous post, it's two days....two months I could understand but two weeks? Fuss over nothing.

No, thats not applicable to any opinion given on any message board. It's given to the ones made so vehemently over something so insignificant. I fully back up strong opinions on things that are really really important but lets face it.....this is hardly an earth shattering crisis is it? All I meant was, people seem to be acting like it is when really, its quite a pathetic in the grand scheme of international news and issues.

I don't ant this to turn into an arguement I'm only saying I really think this is something being made out of nothing.

"Foxy",

The point I am trying to make, and the reason I set up this page was not necessarily to complain about the 2 episode gap! What I am trying to point out is this, RTE and Channel 5 have NO relation to one and other, in different countries AND have a different audience, would you agree?? So on this basis, Channel 5 have ABSOLUTLY NO right to dictate to RTE when they can broadcast the show! And as you will read in the original email I got from RTE, Channel Five have UNSUCCESFULLY attempted(in court) to stop RTE from transmitting the show altogether because they where so far behind the Irish broadcast!

In my opinion Channel Five should broadcast the show at it's own pace, as should RTE be allowed the same right! Would you agree "FOXY"? And an example of this not being allowed to happen is this: Monday 27 August 2007, Channel 5 are not screening the show, and as a result neither can RTE....all because of STUPID Channel BLO*DY 5!

And "Ryan" you are right, in 2000 RTE did have "World Premiere". They never realised they where an episode ahead of Seven in OZ, but they never got in trouble though...they have a good relationship with the OZ networks!! haha...nice one RTE...lol
