I know this is an old thread but when you think about it who has more economic power? Ireland or the UK? I do believe it's the UK.

 What on earth has that got to do with anything??

As far as I know, Ireland are ahead of the UK with many US shows, so I don't think it's about economic power.

This is a pretty dead subject. I don't know why people keep bringing it up. Channel 5 air it first in Europe because they pay a hefty chunk towards the production of the show. If they want to send threats to RTÉ then let them. RTÉ have bigger fish to fry at the moment.

What does it matter who shows it first considering Scottish viewers don't have access to RTE and Five is not widely available to Ireland.

It is all about who pays the most money, this is why networks bid on new pilots from the US or bid for successful shows such as Five did for CSI and Living have just done with Supernatural which ITV have showed successfully for three seasons. The shows would not be made without license fees and funding hence why they tend to go with whoever will pay the most money. And for the amount of money that comes of out of their pockets obviously they are going to want terms and conditions and exclusive rights on showing the episodes first before anyone else does. That is the reason they pay the big bucks in the first place or why bother wasting their money. So if they are funding the show they are entitled to have first rights to show it. Its not like they are blocking anyone else from showing it, it just has to be after they have aired it which seems fair to me as they are paying for it.

I can see it being annoying and frustrating that RTE viewers cannot view it when Five take breaks but the recent break was their first in a while and it was only because they were catching up to the Australian episodes as they were weeks behind instead of months like they used to be. It was the same when Home and Away used to be on the other Scottish channel (I forgot which one, perhaps ITV) and they used to take breaks whenever Australia took breaks which was frustrating but understandable.

Just be glad it is airing on any channel and you get to watch it and its successful amongst the viewers.

And they are not inteferring, the terms and conditions are what they paid for. It would be the same for any other channel wanting to show this. Legally RTE obviously have no right to show this before Five so that is not a case of Five interfering it is the case they paid more money to air this first. If RTE had outbid them they would be airing this first instead of Five. So why bother getting worked up over something that is contractually binding and nothing to do with Five wanting to mess around another channel that is not even accessible over in Scotland.
