How Do You Think The Characters Have Changed This Season?

Lucas, Rachel, Kim and Dan are all characters that I would consider favourites of mine, but recently they're all grating on me and tiring me out because they've all changed so much for the worse. Luckily Lucas, Kim and Dan all have physical attraction working for them, but Rachel... I hate her now, and it makes me sad because she used to be such a great character. Kit's another one - she's just become so selfish and repetitive, and it's not even a selfishness that I can get on board with, like Amanda or Josh, who make it fun... It's just... petty.

I'm not one of those people who'll turn on a character for doing something I don't like. I hated Belle for what she did to Lucas, but I still loved her as a character, because she was still herself, she'd just made a REALLY bad decision in leading Lucas on when she didn't love him... but what Rachel and Kit are doing to Kim is just out and out cruelty, and in times gone by they would have known it and stopped themselves... but now they just keep pushing him, believing that they're completely justified to do so. There's no fun in that. It's just annoying.

I've been defending Lucas non-stop for longer than I care to remember, but recently... he's changed. Like Belle, I wouldn't turn on him for behaving badly if I thought he was still himself, but he's not. He's completely different. I have faith that Rhys Wakefield can make me fall in love with this new character, but I'm still devestated to see MY Lucas killed off so unceremoniously...

Similarly, Dan used to be cool. Now he can't seem to have a scene that's not rife with self-righteous agression, both by lashing out at those in his control, and being passive agressive to his peers...

Kim's been dead inside since finding out about Noah, so I don't really begrudge that character implosion - in fact it's kind of interesting now. But it sux that he's so entwined with Rachel and Kit because I really really hate what they've become. I really want Kim to leave because I can't stand to see him suffer anymore... it's draining.

Very well summed up there emmasi :D. I didn't hate Rocco because he stabbed Sally, I still liked him as a character after but it was obviously what he did that was a very bad decision.

I also agree with your point about some characters who used to be fairly cool and relaxed e.g Dan have recently changed a bit. Lucas is definately a prime example of this. Even at UK pace he has changed because of the situation he was in. He found out that his girlfriend was in love with her ex who he was friends with, so I guess a change in character and personality is to be expected. I think the only chracter who hasn't changed that much this year is Colleen . I guess Irene and Alf haven't to an extent. But recently (in the UK that is) Alf has really been showing some anger and aggression at Cam which IMO is a nice change from what he is usually like e.g ''you better not give him the rough end of the pineapple''.

All characters change from time to time because people do, whether that be because of the situations they are in or because they have been affected by something which has changed there view of things.

The characters in general seem to be darker and meaner and more self-centered.

That is exactly what I was trying to express in the current Aussie episode thread. Wish I had said it like that.

There are quite a few people who are a bit shocked at Lucas behaviour recently so I thought I would discuss him for a little bit without trying to spoil :P.

Lucas has always seemed very different from all the younger characters. He seems or should I say seemed  alot more mature and grownup by his actions and the way he handles situations.

Actions and situations can change people. Its the same with characters in drama's...e.g when Lucas punched Drew just after the calender shoot...he didn't feel much regret because of what Belle and Drew had put him though. Now that IMO is someone doing something to get back at a situation or the people partly responsible. Using the punch-up in other situation, imagine if say Belle and Drew were 'together' but she really had feelings for Lucas. If Drew found out he would probably punch Lucas (if he had the chance of corse :P). So with the roles reversed I think its quite simple to see how situations can effect actions and vice-versa. I hope I made sense btw :P.

Some great discussion happening in here by you all guys btw :D.

Personally I always thought Lucas seemed quite immature. Just because a kid is quiet and studious doesn't mean they're grown up - look at his behaviour towards Beth when they first moved in with her and all the stuff with his 'rebellion', plus his reaction to Belle and Lucas (albeit justified). He showed signs of emotional immaturity right from the beginning with writing in his journal all the time - I got the impression that he wrote things down because he wasn't able to express himself face to face. IMO he still has a lot of growing up to do, which should be interesting to watch!

Why does that make him immature? Isn't writing down his thoughts and feelings the exact opposite of an immature action of punching someone in the face to "express" himself? Also, he's a writer. Keeping a journal is a technique for gathering information and story ideas, including your own personal experiences. Also, he said that writing in that journal made him feel closer to Katie, and the reason he rebelled against Beth was because he felt like she was replacing his mother, and he felt guilty for letting her. I think that the very fact that he had such complex emotions about the situation showed a great deal of maturity, he just didn't have the life experience to know how to deal with it at the time.

The difference is that he used to think before he acted, and consciously chose to do the wrong thing to punish himself and the poeple around him for doing the wrong thing. It was a twisted sense of morality that was based on real beliefs that used to mean something to his character. Now he's just... a jerk. He hasn't been making sense lately... There's only so much filling in on his motives I can do before even I have to say "What the hell??"

That a good point you have made emmasi, he did seem to care alot more and think about his actions, whereas recently especially at Aus pace he hasn't really cared at all. He came across as a lot more willing to take responsibility for his actions but these days he is quite different in that way.

I can see why his reactions would change to certain situations, as he has been through alot of different things throughout his life, but lately his character has really changed and the way he handles things is completely different. Rhy is VERY good at portraying this 'new Lucas' but I feel the way that Luc deals with things now has completely changed from how he dealed with things say last year.

I think the love quadrangle affected Lucas alot, and fair enough too.

But then when Naomi came along, that had an even bigger effect on him. And now he has got it in for Geoff too...well lets just say Luc's actions are very different from what I expected them to be even a couple of weeks ago (Aus pace)

.

It'll be interesting to see if his behaviour changes anytime soon <_<.

Another character who I think has changed alot this year is Kim. He has shown in quite a few situations a mature attitude. Chris' acting has really improved recently which is great :D. Some of the storylines he has had to work on has probably had something to do with that and also the fact that he is a bit older now :P.

I'm going to ask you guys a question that is purely for fun :P. If you could change something/anything about a character what would it be? By that I mean their personality and the things they do. Obviously the individual personalities of the characters makes them that character, but I think it could be interesting to discuss. For example...is there something about a character that annoys you a bit...well here is the place to vent your anger and discuss why that particular personality trait annoys you and why you would like to see it change.

I look forward to seeing what you all come up with!! :D

Hope you don't mind bttb-rox, but I thought that interesting enough to branch out into a thread of its own  which can be found here!
