Ryan Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 No, Dallas is the best soap ever. It's not really answering any particular question as such, but I have to say I pretty much agree with what alexx said. They are a few strands that have made constant through the show like the backbone men/women of a small Australian town, the teamwork, the carmeraderie etc and in that it shows a reality. However, beyond that and to a much greater strength the past few years, the rest the majority of the storylines are just sensationalism to keep us happy and tuning in.
Dan F Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Well I certainly don't find it embarrassing, it's a show that I know a hell of a lot about, have access to hundreds of its episodes, and I have the appropriate contacts on the production team who have been able to give me information on some of the issues that have gone on behind the scenes regarding storylines. Hence why I chose to do my dissertation on H&A
ste Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I think it's cool that you are able to do your dissertation on something you care a lot about and know a lot about. Good luck with it Dan I am sure you'll ace it I won't answer any of the questions myself because I've never really thought about the show in relation to it's country and how it represents it. To me, it's only set in Australia because that's where the guy who came up with the idea lived.
Ryan Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I think however when you take the core values of one soap, they're probably all interchangable. For example, now that the fostering strand has been removed from Home and Away, the things that it stands for, could easily be applied to one of the UK soaps. Dallas and Dynasty are slightly different, much less focused on community and more on family politics. So, the dynamics I guessed that portrayed in Summer Bay, could possibly be applied to any other micro-community.
rising-flame Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 I don't know if it would be any good dan, but I did an open university course last year on film and tv that had a whole section on soaps (admitedly british and american ones) but some of the course material may still be relevant. I have it in pdf format if you want it and think it might be of some help. I can also look on our journals section and see if there are any related articles that might help if that's any good for you? Let me know.

Do you not think he would have come up with a slightly different idea if he hadn’t lived in Australia though? I think when the show started especially it really emphasised where Australia was at that time. I mean so he may have had an idea of a show centred around a foster family in a small sea-side town in Cornwall or something – but I think it would have featured entirely different kind of characters and direction in regards to production and so on. Sure the storylines have been used in many other soaps, and were used in other soaps in America or the UK before H&A was around, but it’s not so much the storylines, more the writing, the characters and production/direction that emphasised the Australian way of life…and still does, its just these days we are a lot more like other countries than we ever have been as a nation IMO.
