Okay so a lot of people might like:

Jack

Matilda

Drew

But why is there not many people who like:

Dan

Kim

Amanda

And couples that are loved very much include:

Jack & Martha

Matilda & Lucas

Belle & Drew

But why not:

Ric & Cassie

Dan & Leah

Beth & Tony

So this topic is basically for you to explain why you like certain characters/couples:

Eg. They're hot

Well i don't like Jack or Drew out of that list, i do like Dan and Kim. I hate J/M and Drelle and Mattie/Luke and like Cassie/Ric, Dan/Leah.

So, i'm pretty much the opposite of everything you've put, which i guess to be your opinion.

I think it's just (for couples) who you assume to have the most chemistry on screen, and for particular characters, just certain traits. Eg - i hate JM because i see no chemistry, and don't think mych of the actors (IMO), i like Tasha because she's unusual.

Ah, i see. Well, i guess part of the reason the couples - in particular - that you've listed a popular, often are popular is because of the writer's design. I suppose that people like Drelle - for instance - because the writer's have designed them to be exactly like eachother so they "fit". This works for a lot of people, who can see why they would get along well, but IMO the reason it doesn't work is that it's all too predictable, as with JM (IMO).

Then again, take a couple like Tash/Robbie or Dan/Leah, and although they're not hyped up as much, i think they work better because they bring out other sides to eachother's character. For example, Dan brings out Leah's sillyness.

For some couples, it's jut a formula - stick one relatively good looking person with another relatively good looking peron and bang! But, for me, i think it's better to actually explore different side to the character, than just to have them in a scene together just to look good. (Not mentioning any couples in particular for that last one :P)

I don't hate JM seperately. In fact, when they're apart i prefer Jack to Martha. Her character has been completely ruined in my opinion.

It's just when they're together, i don't see the attraction. With other couples, at least they have something that draws them together. Like Robbie and Tasha have the fact that they are both weird and were never really accepted socially, plus they're opposites (taking this from their wedding vows), Robbie is head, and Tasha is heart. So, they complete eachother.

I think it's also like that with couples like Sally/Flynn, Dan/Leah, Macass and Cassie/Ric. They have something that draws them to eachother. JM just seem to be two pretty people who've embarked on a relationship that has the foundation of being pretty.

This is just my opinion xxx

I love Dan as a character, hes just a really decent person, which I think is most important to me. I've never warmed to the characters that we're supposed to love to hate, for example Angie.

And as for couples well I hate-

Ric and Cassie- just because you get used to them being together then they split up.

and

Ric and Belle- they just didnt seem to go together very well

Peter and anyone...just because it makes me jealous :P

The thing that makes me like characters is when you can really relate to them, which is usually down to the actors. For instance Indianna played the eating disorder storyline so well with Matilda, you couldnt help feeling something for her. But then theres others (I wont mention names because Im a little scared of some of the people on this forum!!) who you cant really relate to therefore can never warm to.

So basically to answer your questions, I think what makes a character/couple are the actors who play them!

I'm completely over the Ric and Cassie phase. I've never known a couple to break up and make up so much! It bored me after a while. See, if you want too keep me interested..... MAKE UP YOUR MINDS! lol.

I think the quality of the acting is one of the main things that draws you to a character. For example, I think that Amy Mathews is an absolutely fantastic actress and so I have liked Rachel since the beginning - you just really believe all of her lines and I think she played the alcohol phase during the chopper crash extremely well.

Similar to this, as people have mentioned, Indiana Evans played the eating disorder storyline very well showing a whole new depth to Matilda which made me like her character a lot more.

As for couples, I have to agree with what people have said about Jack and Martha - they don't seem to have a purpose or reason for being together. When Jack arrived, and there was the love/hate relationship between him and Martha, I really liked both characters and the storylines between them were really interesting, culminating in the whole Corey storyline and Martha starting to get depressed. It was great to watch the interaction between Jack and Martha and as I sat and watched, I was egging them on to get together. But then suddenly, they got together, got married and that was it - they just became boring.

However, I do feel that this is not the fault of either actors, I think it's to do with the writers. After the explosion at the wedding, the writers tried to fit way too much drama into the show in a short period, and so we've never seen Martha and Jack getting used to each other as a married couple and going through all the trials and tribulations that newlyweds experience. The same week as the wedding, Martha went missing on the chopper, then, when she's finally found, her and Jack spend a bit of time together before their honeymoon. Then, Jack can't go on the honeymoon because of work, and Martha & Tash end up getting kidnapped by Mumma Rose. So that's more time apart, and that brings us to now. You rarely see Jack away from work, and Martha is usually with Tasha or Robbie, so we're just not getting anything to keep us interested in them as a couple really IMO.

The thing is, so many actresses vary in what they're good at. For example, Kate Richie is superb at the serious stuff, whereas Colleen makes up for the comedy. So where others lack, others make up for. (I'm not saying Kate Richie isn't good at the comedy mind). But it's Colleen's comical act that's the reason why I love her.
