Anyone else who doesn't care about Emily?

I think that there's a difference between empathising with what the characters are going through, rather than the characters themselves. I feel Brad and Emily's pain, even though I agree with xGlowingAngelx in the fact that I don't think that they have any chemistry as a couple, but I don't feel emotionally attached to their characters. It's not that I don't care that she has leukemia, it's just that I don't care for her much as a character. I don't really know how else I can explain the distinction. I hope that makes sense.

It's not that I don't care about Emily, I'm just not interested in her. :P I think that sounds less harsh... :P

Well said!

That's how the storyline differs from, say, what Flynn went through. Sure there was a main cast member who would suffer a tragic loss, but with Brad, we're not going to be given enough time to feel sorry for him. Then again we don't know exactly how long Emily has left, so I may feel differently when the time comes.

Hmmm.

I know people aren't saying it, but it's awful just to say "I don't pity her at all". Because people round here are sympathising Steve Irwin, Peter Borck, Wiggle Yellow, and we don't KNOW them.

I felt sorry for her, whou wouldn't? Leukemia's pretty awful, and saying you don't care makes you sound horrible (Sorry, Bloom, not having a go at you) Perhaps better wording. I know what you mean, but when you first read it you're like 'how mean!'

BUt, I didn't spend the nuight crying becuase EMILY had leukemia (iI didn't cry at all) I would've been upset because of the fact that SOMEONE had leukemia...

did that make any sense?

Okay, not to sound rude, but I really couldn't care less about this Emily woman. The woman is not a bad actress, but why are we supposed to care that a total stranger who none of us even know is dying of cancer? We don't even know Brad that well either...

Cancer isn't nice at all, I realise that. When Flynn had it, it was different. we saw how he had helped the town and what an awesome person he was, so when he died on cancer it was really sad :(

I agree with you. We hardly know her, she just came to Summerbay and we found out she had cancer and I didn't really care because I didn't know her that well and she hadn't done anything for the town. when Flynn had it I was really sad because he'd been on for so long and he was one of the nicest and most characters on H&A. Cancer isn't nice, and I'm not saying I don't have any feelings for Emily but If I knew her better I might be sad. I used to feel like crying when Sally cried when Flynn had cancer but when Brad cries I don't feel a thing because I hardly know him... But I do feel sorry for anyone with Cancer :(

i disagree, I really like Emily and think this storyline was a really good idea. Although obviously we aren't as sad as we were about Flynn..I dont think thats possible! But I dont want to see her die, just becasue I think her and Brad are really cute together!

I don't want her to die either, I don't want anyone to die. I'd like to get to know her better. I hope she doesn't die too soon. I want to get to know her character, I'll probably start liking her more if she stays on longer, i'll probably feel sad when she dies then...

I don’t think the audience are supposed to be affected by her death like we were Flynn or other main characters – that’s not the intention of the writers (imo). It’s the introduction of two new people in the Bay, one who is related to Rachel…etc In the real world people meet new people under these kinda circumstances a few times in your life, it doesn’t mean you are affected by there death, but you still empathise for the people left behind and for the guy/girl who has just suffered cancer and dieing because of it.

Brad lives on, but we have a recent history regarding him and know where he’s coming from, from now on. Thankfully he doesn’t have a secret past, though that may come knowing H&A…but I liked this storyline (granted the final scenes weren’t anywhere near as good as they could have been) – but we get some awesome acting out of it by some of the best in the show.

Emily is not a person and this is not real life.

If I hear about someone in the real world who is dying from cancer, I'm likely to think "Oh, that's a shame. How sad for them." But I'm not going to sit around crying my heart out over the tragedy, because if I did that for everyone in the world who was suffering from a terminal illness or dealing with death, I'd have no heart left and would be dead myself by now. You have to choose your battles, and not always get caught up in everyone else’s.

But as I said, Emily is not real. She is a character. A character designed to get us to cry our hearts out. And why would we do that? Because we did it so recently for another character (and the show got the ratings to prove it!).

Flynn wasn’t real either, but his presence – fictional though it was – had been in our lives for years. It felt real. Therefore the pain of losing him felt real.

Emily is no one and nothing. I resent being expected to feel sorry for lines on a page. Maybe if Brad had turned up by himself when she was already dead and been his own character, I’d have accepted it as a coincidence and would have chosen to feel sorry for him. As it is, the whole situation was just a shameful attempt to draw more tears and ratings. The "emotional" beach scene proves that.

I think the only reason that I didn't *care* that much about Emily as I'm expected to is because they made it obvious from day one that they were going to stick Sally with Brad. It's not like they brought in both Brad and Emily together and said 'she has cancer, they're going through this pain'. They introduced Brad and on some level made him have this bond/spark/connection (whatever) with Sally, and then when things started to develop they throw Emily into the works.

So you have the viewers waiting for Emily to die, and at the same time Brad and Sally are meant to be growing closer like that's the focus of the story. Not because it isn't sad for her to die but because it is a really, really simple and stupid plot device to make another romance and as the previous poster said draw more tears at the same time.
