I remember him in Buffy, and I remember thinking how creepy he was. When I first watched 8 Simple Rules I knew that I knew his face from somewhere but I couldn't think where. I was also surprised to be watching Scrubs a few weeks back and he was in (although it was a blink and you'll miss it moment).

Wasn't he JD's dad?

Yes he was and the character had an off screen death.

John Ritter (I think that's his name) died when he was still starring in 8 Simple Rules, and they killed off the character as well. I think they thought it would be inappropriate to recast him, and I don't think it would be right for someone like Sally or Alf to be recast either if the worst were to happen. Purely because of their history with the show, and I don't think the majority of viewers would be happy to see them replaced.

Of course I could be wrong, but I'd hate to see another actress/actor play Sally/Alf.

Yeah I totally agree, I actually really like 8 Simple rules and yeah I'm pretty sure that's his name, his character's death was explained as an of-screen death and the following episodes were about how the family dealt with his death, and you couldn't help but notice that the emotion was really real and raw. I got the feeling that the cast didn't really have to act much in those episodes. And I think it would have been wrong to recast him just as it would be to recast Alf, Sally, Irene etc it just wouldn't feel right.

I think her name is Kym Valentine, she played Libby in Neighbours – and whilst she was pregnant, I remember they only shot ‘Libby’ from the shoulders up and had her standing behind bars and flowers…etc

I think if Ray, Lynne or Kate were to die, they are such an integral part of the show they'd have to be either killed off or go permanently missing, in a more Princess Anastasia and not Matt Wilson type way. To have Alf win the lottery and swan off to Tahiti would be totally against the character of Alf.

For the teenagers they could suddenly disappear off to Uni (apart from Ric) and I think we'd accept it.

I think if they are wrriten out in a way we could believe, because we can appreciate that it will be slightly crud, but it needs to be believable both short term and long term. Fans will not like it if you go totally against the character.

Some shows will have them die off screen in a car accident. On Days of our Lives they had Dr Tom Horton die in his sleep. Alice went to wake him and he was dead. Depends on the character and their age. If old they die naturally, if young they may disappear and return later a new actor playing them.

Dallas had Jock die off screen. GH had the old Quartermaine guy Edward die and used old clips to show him " visiting " his wife Lillian. Then they replaced the character years later with a younger actor, he had been missing. It was stupid and he ended up younger then his wife. When the actress playing Lillian passed away it was done so much better, and they will never have her return.

John Ritter is also Jack in Three's Company.

One of the US soaps I think As the world turns, had a leading Character's actor committ suicide this pass summer. I am not sure how they wrote him out, as far as I know they don't intend to recast him. He had been on their soap for a long time. Detective Hal.

Bridie Carter still filmed as Tess on McLeod's when she was pregnant. They just shot her from different angles. It's possible. As for dying, they'd probably do what happened on 8 Simple Rules and have them die offscreen and everyone finding out about it!
