Home and Away Underscore Discussion

I would have thought it would be the producer – is it John Holms? The big boss, the ones in production has the final say, like they decide what direction the show should take in the way of going into High Definition, change in incidental music, change of credits…etc

I love what you've done with the new scenes Ste - the old underscores go so well with them, especially the Leah & Dan and Zoe scenes. I agree with Alex too, I love the freeze-frame at the end. I liked it when they used to do that during the 90s - it's only short but it does give you time to reflect upon what you've seen.

Meg's death didn't seem the same with that music, and the promo at the end did spoil it. I wouldn't say that music spoilt Flynn's death though. I thought the music they used during Flynn's death really suited it, and I felt it reflected the tone set in the episode, especially at the end when Sally is just lying there and gradually realises that he's gone - it just really all fits in well together IMO. I am 100% with you on the promos though - I feel they ruin emotional episodes, especially after Flynn's death - the last thing we were interested in was the Believers! It wasn't much better here though - I felt the upbeat music of the closing credits didn't go either.

I wish H&A would do what Neighbours used to do with deaths, and play a slow piano version of the theme song or something like that. It reflects the mood far more effectively!

I wish H&A would do what Neighbours used to do...

Never ever say that again. Sorry I'm the president of the I Hate Neighbours fan club. Before I start a huge Neighbours Vs H&A debate I'm going to get back on topic. I am in huge agreeance with the old underscores I'm a huge fan myself. I keep wishing they will play the 'Fletcher's Theme' again maybe a little updated. It fits now that Sally is the new Pippa and she's a Fletcher.

Old scene with new music - Meg's death.

I used this scene to illustrate how soulless and unemotional the current underscore can be. This piece taken from Flynn's death shows how it would have ruined Meg's eerie silent death, and therefore how it actually ruined Flynn's - when it could have been so much better. The promo at the end also illustrates how they can completely destroy emotional endings.

New scenes with old music

Maybe these are a tad overdramatic by today's standards, but as Joey-lee pointed out, if they revamped the old music using new scoring styles (like they did with Bobby's theme in ep4000) then there's no reason why they shouldn't work. I think they fit in quite well in these 3 examples. Especially in Leah and Dan's case where I think it really adds to the scene in a good way.

New scenes with old sad music

As above but different music and scenes.

Oh, I loved that scene and the music when Meg died, this episode IMO is second only to the 4000th episode in terms of writing. The whole story, ending and acting was brilliant IMO. Classic H&A IMO, will never be beaten . THE BEST

This is a great thread for long term fans! Thanks for the videos, you’ve put some real good underscore in there, it definitely makes the scenes more memorable as you mentioned! Got that real sense of 'Summer Bay'.

The music they use these days has definitely grown on me and I think they sound more melodic than 2004, it would be nice for them to repeat some though; it seems a waste to score the scene and only hear it once!
