Bay_Mad Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Haha yes I have to agree there! I often think that neighbours suspiciosly have very similiar storylines to Home and Away. I wouldnt mind if they were far apart..but they seem to come straight after eachother!! I think for a one off thing though, it would be great to have a neighbours meets home and away episode where both casts meet eachother! It would be hilarious to see who would make friends with who!
alexx Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Anyone else noticed Neighbours kinda copying H&A’s style of incidental music (no where near as good though) – and the stalker themed storylines? I don't think they're copying Home & Away's style of underscore at all. Peter Dodds commissioned several other composers last year to start writing underscore for the show as well as the long standing Musical Director Chris Pettifer. If anything, the new material harks back to the early Neighbours underscore that we heard during the 1980's and early 90's, from composers such as Bruce Rowland, Garry Hardman, Brian Beamish, Peter Benson, Guy Gross, jazz musician Paul Grabowsky and former Music Editor Warren Pearson. All of these composers have worked on many other television series and films, some even wrote for Home & Away in the early years. Tom Andrews the current Music Editor has also written some score for the 2006 episodes. The new underscore is written by some of Melbourne's best composers including Niko Schauble, Greg Mills and Vince Deltito and Anthony Dale (aka The Lotus Music Group) I don't think it's copying at all. It's just mixing things up a bit by having some more modern material coupled with the hark back to the older underscore. I loved the incidental music back in the 80’s and early 90’s – they were my favourite. I’m surprised the composers are composing such boring melodic-less pieces (with the exception of maybe one piano piece I have heard when Conner and Dylan found each other on the beach after the plane crash); they can do much better – (see the score in the Neighbours thread under the topic 'Gone a long way Since Mrs Mangle and Bouncer' – or something like that. I uploaded a clip. I liked some of Chris Pettifer's scores back in the later 90’s and early 00 – but since 2005 they seemed to have disappeared and the pieces they use sound so boring and just like noise and effects in the background without any real noticeable melody. My favourite Neighbours piece was used a few times but most noticeably during Todd’s funeral and Jim’s death episodes last scene with Julie and Fiona having the cat fight over him. Ah well its nice to know some of the old-time scores are back, maybe we will hear some of the pieces used back in the early 90's/80's re-hashed with a modern twist, that would be cool. As for H&A I was always under the impression it was one writer of all of the music until recently? I don’t know his name, but I’ve read people speak of him here. I just see similarities in direction and I think it’s noticeable because as someone mentioned, they are basically on a couple of months after H&A have covered the storyline.
alexx Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I thought the plane crash was done very well in Neighbours – I loved the scenes in the water, especially with Susan and Izzy, they acted fantastically. I don’t think we needed to see the plane crash into the water, of course it would have been more dramatic, but as mentioned it wasn’t possible, and they did perfectly with what they had. As for the incidental pieces – that’s what seems to have happened with H&A, they used to have very melodic pieces that were touching and pulled at the heartstrings, as with some of the past Neighbours pieces. Now I think both should have a mix of subtle and original in format to previous years, sometimes some of the actors don’t do some emotional scenes justice, and therefore the music would be a good way of convincing the audience its more upsetting that it actual appears. That’s my take on it anyway. You seem like a huge fan of the show, you know a lot of details there. Thanks.
summerbaychick Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Those music queues were really good weren't they especially whenever something happened to Bobby on a Friday afternoon! Neighbours started before home and away though so who knows who is copying who?
whispered_envy Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 The discussion of who's copying who between H&A and Neighbours has been around forever. The way I see it is that they're both Aussie soaps that have both been running a hell of a long time- there is bound to be some crossover from time to time. This issue won't be resolved any time soon.
Perry Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 Neighbours plane crash was so much better then the home and away one. Yeh, definitely have to agree there. Far more dramatic to watch because you actually saw on board, and lives were actually lost which tends to happen in air accidents Yes but Home and Away did their's first so plenty of time for The Neighbours people to improve their crash. They saw what happened on Home and Away and knew what worked and what didn't. The discussion of who's copying who between H&A and Neighbours has been around forever. Yes I agree, and Home and Away started because Neighbours was so popular when it moved to Channel Ten, and Channel Seven wanted to make a new show to cash in on. However Home and Away started Very differently to what Neighbours was and Neighbours had to step up the drama to compete. Yes they are both long running series and so both shows may have similar storylines at the same time. BUT Neighbours now is getting ridiculous. Home and Away has a stalker storyline, 6 months later Neigbours has a stalker storyline. Home and Away has a Plane Crash, 6 months later Neighbours has a plane crash. Home and Away has a pregnant character who doesn't know who the father is, then neighbours has the same thing 1 year later. And before all you Neighbours fans start yelling out, Home and Away stole the baby thing off Neighbours with the Izzy and Karl saga, may I remind you of the show who started that storyline 18 years ago it's none other then Home and Away back in the Roo/Frank/Bobby days.
((Chazz)) Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 I always thought that either neighbours was copying h and a or h and a to neighbours. But h and a is way better then neighbours anyway so it does't bother me
Perry Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 Neighbours plot stories around 6-7 months before they shoot them. I did say you see something on Home and Away and 6 months later you see the storylines on Neighbours, Thanks Neighbours fan I now know why. They plot the storyline right after they see it on Home and Away now that's just sad.
Pierced Musie Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 For the Neighbours stalker storyline (including plane crash) to be a copy of H&As storyline, it would need to be dumbed down and become crap. At least Neighbours had the guts to kill off multiple main characters and be genuinely sickening. That plane crash disturbed me
